    Winterize Kohler 5kw Generator

Can anyone tell me how to winterize a Kohler 5kw generator?
I couldn't seem to find and thing using the search tool.

I know the generator is cooled by fresh water but it also has a closed cooling side as well. Do you fog the generator same as a small outboard (through the carb?). Do you have to drain the water from the generator first? Is it like Mercruiser engines where the thermostat needs to open prior to adding the antifreeze? Generator is a 2004.

    I appreciate all your help

I use the same winterizing jug that I use for the engines. I make sure stabilizer is added in the fuel. I detach the generator inlet hose from the seacock and connect it with the hose from the winterization jug. I start the genny and let the pump run the 2-3 gallons of antifreeze through until I see pink exit the genny exhaust thru hull. No need to do anything to the closed side unless you want to change anti-freeze.... and you don't need to run up to temp if closed cooled. Shut down, replace fuel filters (fuel filter inline from the gas tank and the fuel filter on the genny). Drain oil, refill and place new oil filter on the genny. Then I remove the spark plugs and squirt some fogging oil into the cylinders. Replace with old spark plugs. (3 cylinders on my Westerbeke) -- Be sure to replace your spark plugs after your initial start in the spring. (I usually don't replace the plugs in the fall, because the initial start in the spring with the fogging oil in the cylinders may foul any new plugs).

    Hope this helps.

I would download a Kohler Gen. owner's manual. It tells how to winterize. The newer models just call for antifreeze through the intake and change oil. That's it, no fogging.
