Fuel gauge issues on my 96 500 DA
I am having an issue with the fuel gauges on my 500. I was hoping that it would straighten itself out once the tanks were filled back up and deisel additive had enough time to slosh around and lube the sending units back up after sitting almost empty for a year or so. However, this does not appear to be the case.
When I set the selector on the dash to port or starboard the gauge shows full and doesnt move. When I select the center tank it shows empty. The center tank is actually full and the port and starboard tank should be about 3/4 full since I filled them up. I found access to the port and center fuel sending unit in the salon floor. The starboard tank is hidden somewhere. I think it would be a little bit out of the ordinary for all three sending units to be bad. Then again....it had sat for some time with little fuel in it and the fuel had all kinds of growth in it.
Would appreciate hearing some thoughts on this. Any suggestions for testing would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Fuel gauge issues on my 96 500 DA
We have issues with the gauges jumping, like they loose ground. But if I jiggle the switch back and forth a few times they seem to work for awhile. I'm thinking the 3 way switch. Easiest of the repairs.

We removed all my gauges and switches yesterday to install new dash panels. Several gauges had loose connections and a little corrosion on some terminals. I did do a little checking on the fuel gauge and switch and they both appear to be working. The switch is definitely switching through all three tanks. The gauge is also going from empty to full slowly as I switch the on on on switch. I think I have a short somewhere that I will have to trace. Or the connection at the harness is jacked up. I can't see it being all three sending units. I have found two of my three sending units (port and center) can't locate the starboard sending unit yet. I have a feeling it was covered up by the hardwood guy. Looking at the pre hardwood pictures, I can't see a hatch where the starboard sending unit should be.

Not sure it if helps you, but on my old 330DA, to change out the the port fuel sender I had to use a jig saw to cut a hole to gain access.

Ohh gotcha my misunderstanding. I thought they were going to charge you for there fuel costs. I am aware they charge you for what they put in your boat to get you going again.
My first tow, Towboat U.S. rocks!
