High oil pressure 454
Two days ago the port engine when started read 60PSI it normall reads 45 cold 38 running at 1400 RPM. Ran engine for 4 hours at 1400 RPM. Pressure dropped to 55PSI. Changed oil filter no change in pressure after running boat for 6 hours.
Oil is SAE 40, engines have 2,200 hours on them, last oil changed 48 hours ago, no metal in oil drained from oil filter, inside of oil filter clean, no oil consumption since last oil change, ran engines at 3,800RPM for 5 minutes did no effect pressures, no smoke from exhaust, rebuilt heat exchangers 48 hours ago, replaced all risers with Merc ones 48 hours ago, no anti freeze consumption, enhine temperature no change.
Starboard engine runs at 45PSI when warn.
We are presently in Washington on our way to Olyimpa after just doing the Hood Cannal. Very nice IGA at Hoodsport. Has very good selection of meat, vegitables very fresh and wide selection, very clean store, staff very freindly, prices very reasonable as good or better than large city, moorage at city dock free in day and $10 for the night.
Any idea why oil pressure went up on gauge, lower helm has oil pressure gauges and the port gauge went up the same, should I be concerned?

Re: High oil pressure 454
Faulty gauge? Swap the gauges and see what it reads with the other one...

Re: High oil pressure 454
my (one) 454 runs about 78 while revving or cruising, and drops to about 50 when idling after warm up, so your numbers don't seem high to me.
But why would yours change, and go higher, seems worth checking out. If I understand you, you have two port engine oil pressure gauges, one below and one above? And they're both reading the same? If so then it's probably not the gauges both being suddenly exactly the same amount wrong, so you have to go further like...
(and here I run out of knowledge... ) Do you have one sensor for both port engine gauges? or?
(Like JimmyBouy said I guess they could both be the same amount wrong, you could try switching them I suppose.. maybe a connection...)
just guesses :)Last edited by Paladin; 09-21-2012 at 11:53 PM.

Re: High oil pressure 454
Only way to know if you have high oil pressure is to remove the sending unit and install a direct reading mechanical gauge. I suspect the oil pressure is normal and you have a faulty sending unit or bad connection.

Re: High oil pressure 454
Have one pressure sending unit that feeds both gauges.
I also suspect sending unit now. Will look for loose wires. Sending unit is beside fuel tank and is hard to get to. Will get new sending unit and alarm pressure pressure switch. Will replace both in spring of 2013 as I fell on concrete dock and have arm in cast for a few more weeks. Fall was from walking position. Wood docks are softer. One arm boat driving is fun.

Of course if you relly want to get him, drop a few of your extrs bolts and a washer or two in his bilge where he will see them. That will keep him busy while you prank the spartan out of him.
