I started working with Internet in 1994 - and has built and sold several technology/internet companies since then.

But today I see companies putting more effort into facebook than into their own websites. The effect is a mass transfer of "landing pages" from the companies own website - to landing on the Facebook web site - a page you don't even own the RIGHTS to. Many product or company searches now lands you straight on Facebook - and the company's own website links turns up on page 2 or 10 of the search results. From a brand value perspective that is called a disaster. People also market their Facebook page MORE than their own website - so effectively paying money to Google or Bing - to grow Facebook? They must be laughing very loud at FB - because the users are turning FB into a new complete "Internet"

What "scares" me about FB is all the crap that is there - it is full close to nothing. Most posts says absolutely nothing of value. I am tired of hearing "my baby did 'x' on the toilet' - Or "my toast is lovely" - and I do value my personal life very much - and I do not care about being tagged in pictures or have all my life detailed out in a way where I have no control at all.

If FB had a lot more "distribution" control - I would consider using it for our baby pictures etc. for the family. But since privacy controls and private distribution groups / security is lacking a lot on FB - I'm using a private website for my family to check up on our baby's progress. And I do like to retain rights for my own material and pictures - and not suddenly see one of my Baby pictures used in FB marketing (which you sign off that FB is allowed to do when you set-up an account)

But a lot of my former employees are making a lot of money making app's and games for FB :-) so that makes me very happy at heart.

And FB growth seem to have stopped - despite the influx from of people from Asia. Today's young generation does not use FB - they think it is a place for old timers - a place where their mum and dad hangs out.

No - for social networking I prefer LinkedIn - and there I link up with people I know well.
the point being websites are irrelevant. People don't go to websites anymore. They go,to "pages" that have the info they want. They bookmark it and return.

Internet security? No such thing. Once you put it out there...it's there. Including email. Ask Blackberry!

Linked In is for person to person biz connections only. Want to find a job? Go there.

I recruit a lot..I use Facebook and Linked In to do research. One day they'll both be irrelevant. Until then...

Man what a great topic. I started an Indie Label and, in addition to a website, have created a Facebook page and Twitter page. I have been trying to make it personal with pics, videos, and stories hoping that will interest viewers. When it comes to marketing I can be the dumbest guy in the room.
