    Glomex Antenna Adjustable Gain Amplifier

I found one of these really cheap (new left over) locally, but it does not include the amplifier. Must I have one, or not? If I need to have one, can you purchase these aftermarket - or does it have to be Glomex?

On my boat the amplifier makes a big difference. That said, the boat is in a town without a lot of digital over the air broadcasts and they come from far away. In your area you may not need it. You could always give it a try without and see. The parts for the amplifier can be bought separately. Check the Glomex web site and you will see they are available (not cheap though).

What did you find really cheap locally, the antenna and mount kit? If so, you should be able to use any amplifier. The amplifier makes all the difference for me and I am located close to the city. As I said I don't think it matters which one you pick but if you buy a Glomex AMP, it (along with your antenna) is covered by lifetime warranty so while you may pay a little more, it is the last one you will buy. I would check ebay.

How important is adjustable gain, versus just a signal amplier? I have only found one that amplifies and the gain can be adjusted in 4 increments.

Probably just personal preference. I would look at specs for total gain to compare the two.

The Glomex amp on mine is always cranked all the way up, I'm about 15 miles from the city and reception with it all the way up isnt that great, if I turn it down 25% I get no stations at all. I would think four positions would be fine.
