How to remove the plastic insert to get shift cable out?

There is one of these inserts:

    GLM21463.jpg

In the hole in the transom shield of an Alpha Gen II where the shift cable passes thru. The hole is to small to pull the cable thru with it in, and it is inserted from the engine side which I cant get slode to with the engine in.

Have tried pushing it back from the outside and broken the clippy bits off but its stuck in there, other engine is the same.

So far all I can think of is to cut the shift cables and drill inserts out, but the shift cables are otherwise fine.

Any tips on getting them out (or getting new ones back in...)

Did you take the spiral wrap off the cable? The cable should pull through those inserts without removing them. I assume you took apart the cable on the engine side and are pulling it out the back of the boat.

Wont go the other way, at least its that way on a Bravo, I think replacing the shift cable is similar on them.

There is no good reason to change them, shift cable does pull out from the rear without any issues.

    Hi,

They didnt have any spiral wrap on so prob not original, I could get the first fraction of the brass crimped tube to show thru the plastic fitting but absolutley would not come out any further, had to tap it with a hammer and screwdriver to push it back in it was wedged so tight, even greased them first, other side was exactly the same.

Just had to cut them in the end, will see what new ones are like, hope I dont have to change the plastic fitting; whilst I could drill it out I cant get near the inside to pop a new one in. But can only presume the fitting has swelled or deformed in some way as at some point the cable must have passed thru it when it was fitted.

Yes other end has larger fitting that screws into the bell housing with the special socket tool.

Whose idea was it to get twin engines, half the space twice the problems ;-)
