Re: Hurricane Sandy Relief to NJ
Getting designated a "Charity" takes time. If you/we are looking for a way for our contributions to be tax deductable, then it is best to pick an established organization to partner with. From my experience in these matters, (I've worked several tornado relief efforts), an established group will assign you a contact person, through whom all efforts would flow. Users here could individually Pay Pal $$ into an account (ie Red Cross) & gain a receipt that way. Or we could Pay Pal it all to Jim who would use it as he sees fit. No individual receipts that way but certainly faster & better in my opinion.
As an example... If we could fill Jim's trailer with bottled water, you would be amazed at how fast people will flock to it & empty it out. As for the folks without roads or means to get anywhere, there are several organizations that have delivery means, that would welcome a drop off.
Either way......I'm in.Aweigh 4 Awhile

Re: Hurricane Sandy Relief to NJ
Guys,
Just another suggestion, Gas in general is very sparse in the area. If anybody can bring gas cans filled. That might be a good idea. I am going to bring some gas cans up from South Jersey to help some of my friends and Neighbors. I know some ppl in Red Bank that can't get anything and need gas bad to run the genny to keep their sumps pumps up to keep the water out.Alvin

I'm not so concerned about the donation being deductable. If you set up a Paypal where we can send money, count me in. The fact that you are willing to handle this personally is inspiring and obviously you are trusted to handle the donations properly. I may not be able to donate as much as Gary but if we all give what we can to help our "family" in need it can ad up.

I agree with Ken. I'm fine with Jim being the caretaker of my limited amount of money. Just let me know how to get it to you. If you're not driving up on Saturday, I could swing by your store on Kent Island.

Re: Hurricane Sandy Relief to NJ
Can somebody here advise me on how to accept the money? If I accept donations into our account, can I show all the stuff I buy with it as an expense? I don't have any accounts that can go "under the radar". Every account I have is tied into my taxes. I actually do have one paypal account that has never had enough money go through it to matter. I guess I could use that one, however, there is no easy way to get money out of it to buy things.
Anybody have any ideas?Jim Maier

Re: Hurricane Sandy Relief to NJ
Can you set up a "product" in your store labeled "Sandy Relief"?
We could all but some Sandy Relief, you could then tie all those monies to an expendature, again labeled Sandy Relief Expences.
Hell, tell the bank what you want to do & set up a Pay Pal account into a new "Community Projects" checking account.
Just thinking out loud here.Aweigh 4 Awhile

Re: Hurricane Sandy Relief to NJ
Jim,
Count me in to contribute.
Let me suggest that you make a separate account from your business and do not run the money through any of your business accounts.
I can just see the feds trying to audit you and charging you corp tax on a great idea to help others.
Check with your accountant before you do anything.
