Fuel / water separator 380 with 8.1 Horizons

1st season with 2001 380 Sundancer. Port engine has started stalling when at idle backing out of dock or coming back in. Heard it might be needing a new fuel / water separator filter. No clue what part to get or where to find to change. Can anybody help?

Take down the serial number from you engine and bring it to your local marine store. They should be able to look up every part you need for that engine. I took my engine number off my survey report.

sounds like your IAC valve, Idle Air Control Valve, is it hard to start unless you give it throttle?

just replaced mine last week, do a search, some great posts on the subject.

You can look it up on the Mercruiser site by serial number and find all of the parts. But you may have a different problem, so before you start swapping parts - what else is happening?

As you look at the front of the engine (serpentine belt end) it will be on the lower left just beside the water pump pulley. It is a normal spin on filter/water separator that looks like an oil filter. Some 8.1's also have an in-line fuel filter which is often on one of the stringers. Just follow the line from the fuel tanks to see if you have one (I don't).

If you engine is running fine at higher RPM's and not starving for fuel, it's unlikely that you have a fuel restriction issue. It might be the "Idle Air Control" or IAC valve. This valve can be located by following a black hose (about the size of a fuel line) that's attached to the outside of your air intake and runs over the top of the engine (under the plastic cover) and to the top/back part of the engine. The device that this hose is connected to is the IAC Valve. If it's not working properly your engine will have issues idling. Lots of posts on this subject.

    Best of luck with it!

Wow. Thanks for the ideas. I will check these out. I don't think there are other symptoms. Just when I first back out of the dock at idle speed, the port engine seems to quit. When coming back in to the dock , the same thing happens. Need to quickly restart to get control of the boat.
