    Advice for new members

This will become a sticky so please refrain from the side comedy business that we occassionally do.

For the members that have been around for a while what advise would you give to new members of the board. Do not write a complete list but one or two comments that you think would beneficial to that new member trying to get the most out of CSR!!!

Since it is going to come up:

Put your boat information in your signature:
In order for people to be able to answer your questions there are two things that you will want to include in your profile/signature. Your location (this will usually tell if you are a salt water or fresh water boater). The second is the year, model, and motor/drive of your boat. We have decided not to require this during the registration process however if you want the best answers for your questions it should be in your signature. If a new member joins take a second to tell them to complete their signature with this information. In the end it just makes it easier for everyone.

    Vendors/Dealers/Brokers/Industry people:
Your participation is welcome. Before posting please check in at the Who's Who forum and let us know who you are. If you are posting about a product or service you offer it should only be relative to the discussion within the thread. Please do not posts links to any services you offer, or solicite forum members in any way to purchase your products or services. If any of your posts are deemed to be a solicitation of your products or services by our Moderators it will be deleted without notice. Several violations will get you banned. You may put the name of your company in your signature. We look forward to your constructive participation.

Remember try and keep the comedy out of this one (they will be deleted Gary)!!!

    Again welcome new members!!!

    Great points Wesley.

Try to stay on topic when making post. If it is going to go off topic start a new thread.

    Re: Advice for new members

Do a search on a topic before starting a new thread. Sometimes the wheel is reinvented.

Don't start a thread about the same topic twice on the same forum or different forums. You will not double your reads and responses.

Try to keep on topic. Sometimes the topic changes and some great information is lost because the title does not match the information.

Try to make sure your post goes in the appropriate forum.
    Be supportive of other members.

There is a little bit of hazing, but nothing is personal. Don't take it that way.

Use the "Remember Me" check box when you sign in and the New Posts - 24 hours. It is a great tool and saves you a lot of time searching all the forums for new posts.

    That's all I got.

    Re: Advice for new members

If you don't have an answer to someone's question/issue rather than posting "I think it kinda might be" sit it out and let someone more qualified/been there before answer the question - we are very fortunate to have several great people in our community - also dont be afraid to PM a member for specific info or more detail on a topic that is hard to cover in this format

Support the site at least as a Silver Sponsor. You will be getting much more than $25 dollars worth of advice. And, no, I'm not a dealer, site promotor, or Club Sea Ray corporate insider (that memory thing).

Add yourself to the Members Map found under Site Navigation on the right side of the screen. Great way to find other Sea Ray owners and boating enthusiasts in your area.

    Re: Advice for new members

I get concerned about the quality of answers and fixes we see from time to time.

Don't guess at a fix unless you carefully state that you do not know the answer, but you are guessing it might be........." Please understand that these responses are only helpful when another CSR member does not contribute an answer that is on point.

Don't be afraid to "sit one out" if you are not sure you know what you are talking about.

If you don't have a Sea Ray or you haven't owned one in several years, refrain from answering Sea Ray specific questions pertaining to boats later than your experience. How 4 Winns, Chapparel, Tiara, Cruisers etc does it is not material when a Sea Ray owner needs help fixing his boat.

You should use the "search" facility to find answers before posting. Posting lengthly answers to complicated questions is tedious and after doing it several times, most of us grow weary and will just tell you to search the site anyway.

    Re: Advice for new members

Think about the subject prior to posting. If you have a subject like "help me out" it will not help another member who does a search later down the road. The search feature is only as good as the words that are put on the board. Try to be specific to the question in the subject.

If Gary replies to your post dont be offended, hes just fooling around. He does that with everyone.

If Frank is giving you grief, hes not picking on you, he picks on everyone.
