Canvas Sun Shade Extension Question

There is a little movement, but my poles are slightly smaller than the flag holder. Works for me, but I imagine if you get a pole with equal diameter, it will hold well. They aren’t as deep as a fishing rod holder.

I am reviving an old thread to show my new approach to a sun shade for the back of the 330DA. We are going to be using it more as a temporary cottage this fall and next spring when our lake house is being built (tearing down our cottage and rebuilding). Since we will be staying at the boat more, and our stern faces south, we need some more shade. The poles are fiberglass extendable painter's poles painted white to be "marine" versions. They fit perfectly in my 30 degree rod holders. I drilled the threaded ends and put on stainless small shackles to attach quick clip stainless carabiners to. The shade is not a great match but its what I could find on amazon. I think a greyer tone would be better if I can find one. The ends are draped over the canvas and some cord with stainless carabiners is clipped around the antenna and GPS mounts. Its very secure and shades the cockpit nicely.

Looks familiar! If you get any rain you may want to consider running the shade under your bimini instead of over. That'll make the total install something closer to 65% water proof :)

Thanks. I’m not concerned about it being waterproof. Putting it over the top supports it across the span. Under would not. I may see if I can find a waterproof version of the shade that is better colour matched. Or maybe have one made up in the right sunbrella by our canvas guy. It’s just a rectangle so should be cheap.

Mine was $7000 on my 410 7 years ago...It did include a full stataglass and screen enclosure...Captain Navy sunbrella...sorry for the “non-resized iPhone pics.

But if you're going to do proper canvas you might as well get it to zip-in to your bimini? That's when things start adding up...

Yeah, and I really only need it for the next few months and next spring and then it will be less critical. I think there are waterproof versions on Amazon that I can get if I want it to be waterproof. For now sun is the issue, but thinking to fall and next spring, waterproof might be something that would be a big advantage.

Seriously glad you did this. We are looking for the same solution. We currently have used (twice) a market umbrella that is more "rectangular". We took off the table top in the cockpit and put the umbrella down in the shaft. Works great actually but I wanted something a bit cleaner without the table pole in the way. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

These are also designed to attach to the standard factory sunshade on the 340SDA. It's a quick up/down when you need some shade and they store away in minimal space.

I have not used Phifertex for this as I wanted something that would also provide rain protection. I would imagine we could use standard Phifertex without much change as is is 11.7 oz vs Sunbrella's 7.9 oz. I would want to experiment with the Pifertex Plus as it show 16.5 oz. We might also need to modify the construction to run additional reinforcement at the edges whereas with Sunbrella we use a traditional edge binding.

I would also think that the Sunbrella stores away a lot easier that the Phifertex would.

Got it - thanks. I was thinking the Phifertex would allow better air circulation in lieu of rain protection but still provide the shade. For sure on the storage; my front windshield Phifertex cover is quite bulky when folded up.

Well our cottage is now almost ready for demolition so I have moved onto the boat. First coffee this morning was a little later than normal. Petty exhausted from a furniture move out Tuesday then halping Habitat for Humanity all day Wednesday harvesting the kitchen and a bunch of other stuff. I spent today deconstructing a relatively new deck to salvage some of the good structural lumber for later. I’m getting too old for this. Time for another beer. And a naproxen.

I posted this on another thread. My 390 has a cantilevered camper top. The only upright is at the base of the hardtop. The sides come off with zippers. Only a couple of minutes to transform it. My neighbor has a similar setup

Same here. Couldn't go back to the slant back. Mine never comes off. It's all one piece.
