Question for the group….so a Mechanic is on the boat, mains rumbling in idle, one of the tacks is reading 600-700, right where I want it. The other tach is reading 1000-1100, but the engine does not sound any different(faster idle) and the synchronizer is reading 12 o’clock…dead even. So the mechanic whips out a small gadget, walkie-talkie sized, with an pull-out antennae, and says….”yep dead on, 650 rpms”.
So two things…..obviously I have a bad tach, and what was the thing he had (I didn’t even think to ask him, duuuuh), I want one!

You may not have a bad tach - it might just need a little love. Some folks can resolve this issue by simply pulling the tach, switch the "cylinder select" selector back and for a few times. Reinstall and see if that does the trick.

No one has any ideas on the gadget ?????

I wonder if that's some kinda novelty thing. I want one!!!!

Then when the wife says: I think the ___________ is acting up. You pull out the box, adjust the antenna, push a few buttons, then go "no it's fine"

Maybe I’ll need to call the mechanic back and ask him, a little walkie-talkie sized gadget to read rpm’s….I imagine it was reading the the cycling of the distributor??? I would like to have one……who knows what it is???
