1987 Sea Ray 268

Just woke up on the old 268, mammas cooking up some breakfast, kids eating, life is good.
Going to need a gimble bearing, some mattress toppers and a proper head but all in all our first weekend went really well. Went for a ride and boat performed great. Took me a minute to figure out the trim tabs but I quickly got the hang of it. Its a whole different ride coming from a little sport boat. Didn't go to far just to Gas Saver Beach and won't go far until we replace the gimble bearing. I'm having a custom transmission built for the Cummins so have to wait to haul it out of the water.

Can't wait for next weekend and we haven't even left yet!
 
Where located?
If gonna do the gombal, also do shift cable, and all bellows. Its like a package deal while you’re in there. Trust me. And google Merc sport bellows, something Merc came out with a few years ago makes changes much easier and wont ever need to change it again in your lifetime.

We had lots of mornings just like you described on our ole 268. Kids sitting at the table eating breakfast, wife up reading a book, and me curled up in my spot with coffee taking it all in. Most comfortable boat I ever owned! Loved those days!

After you get on plane, look behind at wake right behind boat. With outdrive all way down (you did put outdrive all the way down to get on plane? Of course you did) you will see spray coming out of both sides of outdrive. Trim drive up until no more spray, about a 3 count. Experiment. When that spray is gone the outdrive is trimmed properly.

Yes, drive trimmed all the way down, get on plane and trim up a little, heard rpms increase and stopped trimming just before porpoises, seemed to run great.

Trim tabs were interesting. Right after leaving the marina for the first time got on plane as above and had a starboard list mostly due to the generator and not a full tank of fresh water. Pushed the starboard trim down switch and woah!!! Listed hard to port so pushed other switch and listed hard to starboard. Tried to correct it and as we did had to make a hard right turn. Watched my daughter sitting at the dinette as we turned and it looked like she was 15 feet above me. Scared the crap out of me. Got it slowed down and finished the turn and we beached it at our spot, 5 feet off the shore it drops to 20 feet deep and let my white knuckles relax.
On the ride home trimmed the drive again and this time tapped on the trim tab switch and let it settle then tap again, settle, to get it where I wanted it. It worked much better that way. I'm a driver, converted almost all my vehicles to manual transmission, race desert motocross still so I enjoy driving a lot and I can't wait to get the boat out again and learn how it wants to be driven and fine tune the ride.

Second question, the transom fold up bench is missing. Does anyone have pics they can send me so I can build one from scratch? I'd love to be able to use this seat.

This is a photo of the rear seat in my '86 270 so it might be a little different. I'm 6' tall and it is comfortable for me to sit on. Building one from scratch looks like a job though.

3rd paragraph. Hit trim button shortly. Wait, try again. As you found, a little adjustment goes a long way. And if people are walking around, it messes up the plan.
You will never get side to side trim right if people walk around.
 
Yeah, you just want to bump the tabs and let her settle in, then bump again, repeat until you get her at the attitude you prefer. Never push and hold….lol

I would like to turn the bench seat area into storage and go with two deck chairs.
I was able to tighten up the two rear facing fold out seats so they can be used though not very comfy, they now work.

I was a total noob
Ride back went much smoother.
 
So I bought the Sealand Dometic 711 M28 toilet from Ardemco Supply Co. It was on sale for almost 50% off. Customer service was top notch with these guys. The base is slightly larger than the platform that the toilet sits on. My options are to drill into the stringers where I can secure three mounts and the last through the fiberglass with a backer. Or mount a plate to the mount area and secure toilet base to plate. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Second project is to remove water heater to get leaking water tank out. While doing this I would like to remove the coolant lines that heat the waterheater when the engine is running. I have an on-board generator to heat my hot water. Is there a problem with removing these coolant lines?

Changing water pump impeller and housing, alpha one gen one. Should the shaft coming out of the waterpump housing turn freely by hand? Mine does not. I wanted to rotate shaft to facilitate lmpeller going into pump housing.

It rotates free. Must have been feeling the resistance from the junk impeller.
