Hello everyone, my 2005 Motor Yacht has some ugliness that I want to fix. The laminate used to cover the particle board in various parts of the cabin is showing discoloration in several areas. See below for one example in the galley.

I contacted John at Restoration Marine ("PlayDate" on this forum), but he told me the replacement laminate that he sells was only used on Sea Ray boats up to about 2003. Then I called Brunswick Customer Service and spoke to Scott, who was very helpful. Sea Ray used a material called Lignapal in my boat and others of that vintage. Lignapal is made in Denmark, using a real wood veneer over a plastic backing and a lacquer coating on top. Sea Ray actually stocks 4'x8' sheets of Lignapal in the colors used when the boats were built, and can be ordered through a Sea Ray dealer. I see it's also available at Flounder Pounder in some colors.

Scott at Brunswick also put me in touch with a guy named Mike who works at J&M Marine in Florida. Mike's specialty is applying and repairing Lignapal in boats. I spoke to Mike and it sounds like he will be on the road during the off season, including the Chesapeake area toward the end of winter because he gets a lot of work in this area.

Does anybody else have any experience with repairing Lignapal in a Sea Ray? I'm probably going to get Mike from J&M to repair mine unless I find another option.

Just my opinion, but if Mike comes recommended by SR and he will be in your area, why would you rather shop around for someone who is an unknown quantity rather than go with the recommended guy. I'd bet SR would not have recommended him if they didn't have faith in the quality of his work.

You have a huge investment in your boat. On a project such as you plan to undertake, that is not the time to cheap out.

I'll bet if you thought about it for a few minutes you could think of a few reasons why I want to shop around a little before I have this guy work on my boat.

Mike and a helper put an entire interior in a 48DA in our marina. The owner's wife is the pickiest, most hard to please woman in the world. They live 300 miles from the boat and didn't even realize they were looking at the new interior when they came back from Atlanta. No sawdust, not dirt on the upholstery and the seams/joints were better than the factory. After seeing Mike's work, this wouldn't be a close call for me.

I have the exact same thing in my "08" sundancer and would be very interested in the contact info. My boat is also on the Chesapeake. Thanks!

Joel, I must be missing something because I can't think of a single reason ((well, other than the cost of this Mike person if he's WAY out of line with others)) why I would ignore the recommendation of SR on a craftsman and go with someone who is unknown to me. OK, I just thought of one....if Mike is not available to do your boat.

Thanks Frank, that is helpful.

Thanks for the contact, Mike was on my boat last week, what a great guy, and did a fantastic job. Other than a few things move around, the boat was as clean or cleaner when we returned last friday. Would definitely recommended him.

That's great news! What was the extent of the job? Did he redo all the laminate in the cabin, or just fix some damaged areas?

He fixed a few doors, valances , one side of fridge and a few other flat surfaces. Did he ever do any work for you?

Can I get the contact info for Mike?

Actually, what may be really helpful is if someone posted Mike's contact info.
There are three JM Marines in Florida.

I have been getting a lot of Restoration Marine website questions regarding Lignapal on later models and people looking for someone to repair their boats. Mike is the only guy whose name keeps coming up.

I'm looking to purchase a 2005-2008 50/52 Sedan Bridge. Most have some de-lamination issues on the cabinets. Were you able to have Mike from J&M fix your cabinets? Do you have his contact info?

Thanks,
