Raw Water Pump Failure

I've had the shaft walk out failure on one pump but ended up replacing it with a Mercruiser pump on that engine so this year the other pump started leaking so I went with Hardin and I can see the difference, water pressure is always higher. Over the winter I'll change out the Mercruiser pump for a Hardin pump. IMO Hardin is a superior pump and 300 bucks cheaper!

I admire the skills some of you have to rebuild stuff like this. On my prior boats with gas 7.4s when I replaced them I put the old ones on eBay for sale. They always sold quick to guys who rebuilt them as remanufactured then resold them.

Same here, I emailed one of the ebay guys who sell rebuilt ones to see if they wanted to purchase the old units. They gladly gave me $35 each and sent me free postage returnable boxes. Very easy, I turned around and used the money to buy 14 gallons of gas.

I had the Stb side go last year by the bearing spray. Just replaced them both with new... The one that failed was a rebuilt unit

Had the same thing happen a few months back. Definately replace both pumps and I was strongly advised by the dealer and my mechanic to buy new versus a rebuilt. It costs more but you'll have peace of mind that they wont crap out after a couple months. Mine cost @$900 each after negotiating a discount with the dealer. Good luck.
One additional thought. I didn't notice my raw water pumps were bad for quite a while and by then had accumulated some rust on my flywheel and pulleys. I cleaned them best I could but still has rust on them in spots. Just recently as a result of this water spray and rust, my Starboard idler pulley blew apart a couple weeks ago causing fan belt to come off and overheat the engine. I guess the bearings were corroded by the water spray over time. It was an easy fix after ordering the part on amazon ($50). Note, dealers usually don't stock these anymore. Anyway, I then replaced the Port engine pulley shortly after as I noticed it was staring to fail as well.
