My Slipmate wrecked both his I/O drives on a rocky bottom and they need to be replaced.

His boat is a 2004 Four Winn’s 328 Vista. New, the drives are $15k a piece. His boat isn’t worth $30k so new drives are problematic.

I’m looking for two used or rebuilt ones for his boat. Any suggestions?

Look here, then replace with Mercruiser…

Insurance?

He had Geico and they basically depreciated the drives to the age of the boat. As a result he only got $3K for the damaged drives. I got him a great deal on two new sets of Volvo props but the drives are a different story since Volvo does not sell rebuilt drives.

I'm looking for a recommendation. Yes, I have seen them on Ebay and other sites but I am looking for an outdrive shop that has a great reputation.

The lower cases are cracked so there is no hope in rebuilding his set of drives. While the uppers may be salvageable ......it costs money to have it on the ground waiting for parts. Worse still is the guy lives on his boat so putting it on the hard for a few weeks means he has to find another place to live.

Yet another experience to add to the "I don't like I/Os" list.

Any first hand recommendations would be appreciated.

Just to wrap this up...... I exhausted every lead I could on this to help my slipmate. The problem with the rebuilt drive market is the quality of the work and the delivered price. There were several high quality stern rebuild drive companies in Florida but their price was $9k per drive plus shipping.

The best alternative I found was dealing with Volvo directly. They will sell new drives to me for $11k a drive with free shipping. Just about everyone else wanted $13k, 14k, 15k for the exact same thing. To get a better price you have to be a dealer and the bar is pretty high for that in the US.

Volvo does not have trade accounts so the price is the price. Still, it is better than the $30k he was originally quoted and frankly better than two rebuilt drives for $18k plus shipping.

I personally would have gone with rebuilt ones from somebody like Japsper. They probably would have been better than what was on there since they have new parts. Unless he's keeping the boat for 5, 10, 15 years it doesn't make sense to go new in my opinion.

Not to beat a dead horse but are the DPS drives the composite ones that failed? If they are I'd go with the ocean drives.

I worked in Auto claims my first job out of college. Depreciation was something policyholders had a tough time with. For us it was usually tires that were depreciated and some parts as well. It sucks for the policy holder, but it does make sense.
