I'm due for my routine iPhone upgrade so I've been reading about the features on the new iPhone 14.

I just learned that the 14's can communicate via satellite if you're out of range of cell towers. This is new for this version of iPhone and is fascinating (to me), it even enables location sharing via the satellite connection.

For any boaters that potentially don't want to invest in an EPIRB this could be a nifty option if you're already on the iPhone upgrade path. Get yerself a floating phone case and get out there! :) For those of us with EPIRB's this seems like a stellar backup.

Apple says it's free for the first two years. I wonder what they'll charge after that.

Im kind of an iPhone geek. There were lots a complaints about the 14, wont go into it, reading the 15 will be coming with a lot of upgrades, titanium body, bulletproof glass, read up. Its only about 5 months. I would wait.

I am still using a iPhone Xs...

Me too. Finally upgraded my Iphone SE (first edition) to an iphone 13 mini last month.
My last iPhone was 12 years old….. people would see it on a bar or table and make jokes about it….. strangers. When I got the new one… the sales guy said so we will see you again in 12yrs?

Interesting for sure. I think of it being similar to the discussion can I replace the chart plotter with an iPad.

I consider myself open to early adoption. Do some searching, I think there is a thread where I posted about using an iPad with blue chart software on a trip from North Carolina to south Florida. 7 or so years ago.

I say this to define my statement not as one unwilling to accept change.

to answer the question would I consider replacing my epirb with an iPhone? No friggin way. Why?

if your cruising defines the need for an epirb, I just don’t see trying to depend on what “appears” to have some similar characteristics.

Why would anyone bet their life and the lives of others on an Iphone that they hope will send a text message to an Apple Call Center for distribution?

I like the innovation but communicating with a satellite requires battery power which an EPIRB is purposely built for the task and conditions. Relying on an Iphone battery when you are in a life threatening situation just to save money seems kind of crazy.

Wow, you had me beat. Mine was only 6 years old. Battery would only hold a charge for a few hours and Apple wouldn't replace so figured it was time for a new one. I like the small size phones to keep in my pocket and compared between the new SE, 12 mini, and 13 mini. I was able to get a Verizon refurbished 13 mini for a good price and I hope this phone will last me at least 6 and maybe 12 like you. By then they'll be on the iphone 25 or something.

By then, the phones will be implanted and reading your thoughts to report your allegiance to the Party.

That's indeed an exciting feature of the new iPhone 14, especially for boaters! The ability to communicate via satellite and enable location sharing can be a game-changer for those who spend a lot of time out on the water. It's like having a backup safety device right in your pocket.
Speaking of cases, you can check out this selection of iPhone 14 Phone Cases. They offer stylish and protective options that could complement your new device perfectly. Plus, with the free satellite communication feature for the first two years, you'll have peace of mind both in terms of safety and style.

iPhones don’t like water
