A boat stack storage yard in Seattle called Seattle Boats had a fire last week that destroyed 30, up to 60, boats. A potential arsonist was arrested that morning sleeping in a nearby floating boat. The yard is on Lake Union in a heavily residential area.
My North Seattle neighborhood has seen a string of dumpster and abandoned building fires. The homeless are the culprits, warming themselves or smoking fentanyl. The message is to increase security for your boat, boatyard, or marina. Also, check with your insurance agent. The risk is no longer just theft. Halon only extinguishes engine compartment fires. Loss of use this summer is particularly sad.

I’ve reached the point, while I love boating if mine got toasted I would pocket the cash and call it a day. Not got the interest in boat shopping again and starting over fixing it up.
I'd see if I could get replacement cost coverage and a loaner complete with bikini clad crew. Speaking of making lemonade, I posted the Craigslist ad of the boat I have for sale on the pole in front of the burned out Seattle Boat yard.

Our local news ran the story and gave the address where it happened. As soon as they gave out the address I knew what company it was. I've never been there but have driven by it many times on our way to our fav restaurant.

Sad.

I have not yet heard what evidence they have that tied the homeless guy to the fire except that he was sleeping on a nearby boat. Arminius, have you heard anything more about that?

I’m currently moored at Newport Bay Marina. I’m in a slip, but Seattle Boat also operates dry stack storage (“Sky Launch,” as they call it) here and they’re currently constructing new stacks to increase capacity. I wonder what this means for their waiting list.

I had considered using the dry stack storage, because it sounded convenient, but ultimately decided against it.

They won't do a thing to the guy either. That's exactly what our state leaders have created.
That's not a political, just the truth.

Unfortunately that is too common a problem on the West Coast. "Oh the rich people with boats have insurance ......it won't cost them anything.....did I mention they are rich and the poor guy was cold.....he just was trying to keep warm until the State of Washington gives him his living wage of $5k a month."

We also have that stupidity on the East Coast. The only difference is that the limousine liberals on the East Coast just run their mouths until they get car jacked or mugged and then it is a different story.

Just insane.

I sent one to the electric chair once. A fireman had died in the structure fire. It was the preliminary hearing like Kohberger will face in June in Idaho. It was reversed on appeal and the chair was permanently unplugged. Kinda sad but looked good on the resume when I was going for a job in Seattle.

Yee-haw! Head-em-up, boys! Although, I truly believe a couple of public hangings would make potential law-breakers think twice before committing murder.
Arson should not be made light of. It is impossible to predict the outcome once it has been started. There may be loss of life by a fireman falling through a flaming floor as happened in my case long ago. Many residents of an apartment building may die by smoke inhalation. Homeless people may be trying to warm themselves but this does not reduce the extreme seriousness of the crime. I think it is a capital (hanging) offense under federal law where there is loss of life. Felony murder (the getaway driver trap) may get reversed as being a stretch. The fact that they need lighters to smoke their fentanyl doesn't help.

I hope no one thinks I was making light of arson. As far as I'm concerned, that's just about the lowest way for someone to get back at another. Also, I'm curious what you meant back in post #3 by "Speaking of making lemonade, I posted the Craigslist ad of the boat I have for sale on the pole in front of the burned out Seattle Boat yard." You'd posted your boat for sale in front of that crime scene? Not even wait for the body to get cold?

In NY City you can commit armed robbery, arson, carjacking or anything short of murder, and at most you will get an appearance ticket.

However, if you pay off a hooker you will be charged to the fullest.

A recent example of the Bail Reform Law - a guy was arrested on an illegal handgun charge as he attempted to shoot his ex-wife. Free on no bail, however the judge DID issue a restraining order so he couldn't visit the wife. Day 2 - new gun, dead wife.

They need to start making those restraining orders out of body armor rather than paper.
