Official Cummins QSM11 Thread

Which impellor are you folks using with the QSM 11? I installed the SMX versions from Seaboard Marine last time.

Time to get ready for the season and have a few questions. Do I need my serial numbers for the specific filters, impellers and recommended oil? Looks like Valvoline Purple 15w 40 is most recommended oil? 7.5 gal per engine.

Is there a link or list for the required filters and impeller? While I'm at it what about the Onan generator? Is there a link for the filter and impeller?

I use Fleetguard filters for fuel, coolant, and oil. The coolant filter needs to have the correct additive percentage.
Rotella 15W40 oil is what I use for engines, gears, and generator. Tested before every annual change.
The impeller can have two different spline counts - 10 and 14. You need to pull both covers and count before you buy.
Do not attempt to pull the impeller without retaining the phenolic liner - the anti-rotation pin will for sure drop and be forever lost. There is a procedure.
These are for my boat -

I notice there is a Fleetguard FS1000 on engine filter and a FS1009. I can’t find the difference.

What is everyone using?

We are having some leaking exhaust leaking around the turbo. Wasn’t exactly sure if it was a crack or exhaust to turbo gasket.

We pulled it apart today and felt confident it was warped mating surface between the turbo and exhaust. Planned to have it shaved down and reinstalled.

Mechanic just called, he cleaned it up at his shop and said he now sees a crack.

See third picture.

I can’t say that is a crack but more like how it was manufactured.?. I always hate this doubt but wanted another opinion…

Looks more like a casting line that didn't get machined out.
I'd clean it up and Magnaflux it. Any auto machine shop can do the Magnaflux. If it checks out ok then chuck it into a mill and get that surface true.

So I went to the mechanic's shop to get a closer look. They were adamant that the turbo needed to be replaced. See attached, I agree now there is a crack so we ordered a new one... $4500 in parts ughh...

Mechanic found a Reman Turbo that saves a few bucks. Same 90day warranty…

Ordered two replacement turbo blankets to get rid of the aluminum shields. Apparently Cummins buys these same ones for their new motors. Seaboard sells them for quite a bit more than direct by the way…

My QSM11s do not have the heat shield blanket on them. Also noticed they have the original style air filters on them with the metal mesh on the inside which i hear is a no-no. Debating if I should buy new style filters and the blankets.

I replaced with Seaboard blanket and air filters. Happy with it all. Also had DiAngelo make new risers.

Out with the old and busted, in with a new starboard turbo and blankets… turbo blankets are so much better!

Estimate for after cooler removal and cleaning, adjust valves and replace belt? Thinking I might have this stuff done in the off season.

QSM 11 owners - Do you do a Treatment Backflush your engines and coolers every couple years?

I do - every spring. Florida....

Thanks, was wondering if it (doing a backflush) was a waste and not worth the effort. I haven't done anything since 2019 (when we) pulled the exchangers, coolers, pressure testing, etc. Thanks for any feedback.

Oh, I thought this was in reference to Barnacle bust'n.
Isn't it around every 1000 hours for a teardown?

how often should a fresh water boat intercooler, etc be torn down.
