Tie downs for Dinghy

3/8" Tie Boss, or not beefy enough? Rated for 300 lbs.

I have a number of these and keep finding new uses all the time. Pretty cheap. Metal hooks appear to be zinc plated so stainless hooks would be a good addition if used on a boat.
I don’t think I could trust those for a dinghy tie down….. I am already in on the turnbuckle cable tie downs. I bought the snap shackles from sailrite. They are cool I have one on my desk to play with….

Yeah am interested in the “fixed lanyards” as well. Do you have a picture of those?

thanks
Tom pics please. I have only ordered parts and a spool of cable. I have the crimp tool so I plan to make all my own stuff. Since my dinghy will be on my Hurley H3O+ davit system I will customize it to my liking so would love to see your set up also.
Hey Guys - The two rear lanyards are nothing but a nylon web strap that I have hooks on both ends. It is adjustable but after I got everything working right I stitched the webbing together removing the adjustability. The upper hooks go in eyelets on the transom on each side of the engine. Then I cross them down to the swim platform forward of the foot and the bottom hooks connect to a couple of deck rings. To connect I slide the dinghy back on the chocks a bit, get the straps connected then push the dinghy forward which tightens the straps.
Then I go to the front get the turnbuckle installed and tighten it down. It pulls the dinghy further forward tensioning the rear straps and at the same time pulls the bow down firmly.
I'll trim the engine down against the rear straps which takes some of the stress of the actuator.
With the Presto Davits there is 4 or 5 inches between the skeg and swim platform.
Super simple and seems to work great for me. As you know it is a pain to get behind the dinghy to get those straps set up; this was as simple as I could get it limiting my excursions back there.

Well got started and collected all the parts needed. Now just have to get this baby on the back of my boat and “cut to length”. Thanks for all the great ideas

I bought a bunch of those sailrite snap shackles….. I have been playing with one on my desk at work. There is a lot of thought and engineering went into a $20 part. Now I see how a turnbuckle works well as when you release the shackle it virtually needs no slack from the turnbuckle…. Very cool

My zipper pulls showed up today. I don’t have fancy anchors as I don’t shop Amazon….. 12 for $12 freight included on eBay

went to west marine today to look at their crimping wire cable. I really don’t like how bulky the crimp is. I was hoping for the round type….. so need to figure that out

they also have their own brand of snap shackles…. I didn’t like it…. Sailrite has it figured out

Here's a bunch of cable crimp sleeves to choose from.

Seeing this set up (witch I will be going to) has a finite margin of leeway fore and aft. What cues do you use to get that perfect alignment? will be on Hydraulic platform driving on from the Port side. A vinyl decal to line up to the forward chalk?

There are two ideas in this thread…..one is to have a fixed length off the bow or two fixed lengths off the stern…..so you would fasten the fixed length and pull the dinghy back then fasten the stern with the turnbuckles……. Or the other way around if fixed on the stern
I’m going to play around with this idea with my ratchet type before committing to one or the other

I have a reference point, seam in dinghy tube and where it should be relative to the swim platform lift arm. If I line that as I am lifting, all is golden.

after a couple times you will find your alignment point.

Many thanks! Last night I set up the bow Snap Shackle set up and it works as billed. No messing around with the ratchet straps. I'm a believer! on to ordering parts for thew stern. Changes I will make: 1, Swivel Snap Shackle With versus fixed. This will allow more freedom. 2. I'm looking at making the rear center a "Fixed" length w/ SS rod and jamb nuts to hold length. I also added a hash mark to rub rail and hull to line up w/ the forward chalk.

This "Snap shackle / Turnbuckle" concept is working well. Far better than Ratchet straps. We have one for the bow on center line and stern Port & Starboard. Much thanks all for the great input. Mike

Well I finely got them done. The aft cable ties are adjustable but once set will not be adjusted. The single bow tie on centerline will be adjustable but very little to tighten it down….. and I threw 2 ratchet straps away….. what a good feeling that was

I do the same thing. I slide the dinghy back and connect the aft lanyards then slide it forward and pull it tight with the forward strap. It's challenging to get around the back so it makes it easier to simply connect to the aft dinghy tiedown loops.
