What kind of car did you learn to drive in and what was your first car

1963 Chevy 1/2 ton step side. Three on the tree and the most gutless 235ci 6. Sure beat walking though. Drove it all through HS until I joined the Navy in ‘79. Bought a ‘66 Chevy Impala. Wasn’t as nice as this one but went through it mechanically at the base hobby shop and it was a great car. Back seat was as big as a sofa. ;). Many a San Diego drive in:cool:

Edit, this was my mom’s car before mini vans. Imagine the fathers of my girl friends when I rolled up in this thing every now and then.

I learned to drive in a 1951 Ford Victoria. I'd sit on Dad's lap and I'd steer and use the gas and brakes.

My first car was a 1958 Chebby Biscayne. Drove that thing for 3 years until it cost me more in oil than gas. It burned oil so bad I frequently got stopped for the severe grey smoke cloud I created. My GF lived about 65 miles away. I bought oil in a 3 gallon can and it took 3 gallons to get to her house then another 3 gallons to get home. I learned what huge back seats were good for.

I also drove the hand-me-down to my older sister late 60s VW bug before I got my Duster, sorry "Gold" Duster. I never knew what that snake skin roof stuff on it was. Damn that is an ugly car now that I look at it. I had more pimped out stupid crap on that thing than I can remember.

“Snakeskin”???

That’s Gator Grain!

Learned on a 71 Ford f100 3 on the tree, and rope n pinion steering. My first car was a hand me down 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 from my brother with a blown engine. It was given to me at 14. My dad said if you can get it running you can drive it at 16. I rebuilt a 302 and had it on the road at 16. I still have my 2nd car. 1967 Grand Prix convertible.

First drive was a mini like this

I was on the high school football team…. One of the players… James. His dad bought him a mini for his birthday…. He got razed hard core. One night we were in a very fancy neighborhood at a party…. A bunch of us from the football team picked it up and walked it across the street and put it on the neighbors front porch….. to this day I have no idea how James got it off the porch….. it was pretty funny back in the day

Cars at our house had a two step criteria. #1 Had to be a used Nuns car. Radio Delete bench seat and a view of the ground below, #2 Had to have an ash tray that could easily fit a medium coleman cooler and 23- to 34 Duchmaster Cigars. Yes it was a Chrysler as big as a whale. Not a clue back then why girls parents did not like us driving in that space ship. We fit in parking spots by bumping bumpers with the cars between us. Kept it till the Hood rusted through and blew off on the highway. Back then I get $50 for scrap.

Car I learned to drive (Dad let me burrow on the weekends) was a 78 Dodge PU short bed with three speed on the column and no power steering, no A/C…

First car I purchased was a used 1982 Toyota Celica GT 5 speed manual. Sweet car. Still miss it.

Learned to drive in a Corvair, 3 on the column.

First car was a 1960 Ford Falcon. A/C? Hell, it didn’t even have heat! Made driving it to Slippery Rock State College (near Erie, PA) pretty dicey in the winter, but I managed. My Dad told me it took me two hours of work on it for every hour I could drive it, I did learn a lot, though.

Also lost my virginity in that car, which means every minute I spent on it was WELL worth it!

The mini was in South Africa. They were dime a dozen there. When I got back to the States in 79 I only wanted big American iron with lots of buttons. Had the Chevy above then a Chrysler imperial and finally got over the urge with an Olds 98. Then it was onto sports cars.

Yeah. I had the Celica GT coup in college. Car was a blast.

First one I drove was my dads 1976 F250. Had a 390 4 speed. I was about 10 years old and drove it around the hay fields pulling a trailer while my dad and his buddies loaded it up with hay. When I turned 16 and got my learners permit my mother had a 1980 Chevy Monza fastback with a 4cyl 4 speed so I drove that and my dad had a 1979 F150 351W with a nice cam and head work so it made a little power. It was an automatic though. Then my first car I gave details in the other thread but it was a 1972 Olds Cutlass S that I bought off my aunt for $200. Had a 350 with a 2 bbl carb

Learned to drive on a 1964 Corvair convertible three-speed automatic. It had seat belts, which at the time was a factory option. Drove it through high school and first few years of college. Great traction in the snow and could even drive it on the beach because of the rear engine. Perfect car for a lifeguard in the summer. First car was a 1980 Datsun 280ZX five-speed manual. Fast off the line and great handling in curves but only in fair weather, would fishtail if the road was wet.

Learned on a '59 Studebaker Golden Hawk GT. 1st car that I owned was a 61 Ford Fairlane with a 292 and "3 speed on the tree".

Interesting cars.
Raced a go cart at 8ish. Got tangled up in a crash in a race and mom pulled that plug. Moved to a lake and drove the folks boat all the time in my early teens. Learned in my dad's Plymouth Fury in 1967. Dad bought me a new 1968 VW bug the summer before my senior high school year. Got it into town, he pulled in a Kroger parking lot and got me driving a stick. Had to figure it out to get us home. A similar story to @Blueone, during the Friday school dance, my buddies picked it up and set it on blocks. They were all hanging around when we were leaving, had a good laugh and proceeded to get it back on the ground.
