Greeting All, When I say In new to this im really not kidding and to make matters worse I am not a mechanic or Electrical person. So make this as short as possible I have a 1985 SeaRay Seville 140 Hp Mercruiser purchased 1 year ago. Boat Runs fine starts up had a new floor, Carpeting Etc Done the basics. I had the little extra money on the side and decided to have old wiring redone add a stero new switches and a few simple lights in the cabin. Person reaches out to me says he is able to do this for me in 2 Weeks so I let him take the boat. Three Months Later and tracking my boat down I get it home and look.. All the Wiring is basicly taken out except for the engine harness but the dash, guages, Ignition, Trim control everything is just wires nothing is hooked up basicly he took all the old stuff out ran some dead end wires nothing labled and I have no clue were anything goes or was. I can't even start the boat the key ignition is sitting in my hand with no wires attatched as the guages also. I was able to figure out the fuel, Oil, Water, Tach colored wires and label them but the ignition and trim pump and tilt raise lower is a mess and im Lost. The only Reason I am reaching out for any help is I had made a promise to my sons to get them out on this boat before they left for their Military adventure. If anyone has any idea on how to get this boat running again I would be greatful I have no clue how to wire the old ignition switch 4 pole switch providing pictures to give you an idea of what I dealing with. The ignition switch has a letters on it not even sure what it means or how to hook up some of the old stuff to just get the boat to start without blowing it up.

As far as your ignition switch is concerned terminal marked B would be red purple wire terminal I would be a purple wire and S would be a yellow red wire. That should get it running

Fortunately that is a very basic boat. I could not find your specific model but below is a typical small Sea Ray from 1983
This is all the non-engine items for an 83 Monaco.

All the engine wiring should come to the helm as a single harness. You already found some of the gauges.
The ignition is shown above
B= +battery from the engine harness
S= Starter thru neutral safety switch in the shift/throttle control usually yellow with red strip
I= Ignition and will also power the gauges
Each gauge will have an Ignition, Sensor, Lighting, Ground (usually the bracket studs)

Do you have the engine Mercruiser serial number?

Here is a typical helm wiring for that era Merc harness
Colors could be different these early boats were not as standardized as later.

That merc harness drawing should be correct for that engine

If your throttle does not have a kill switch you wont have the two purple wires

Just want to Thank you all for the help so far, Well I Finally was able to get Guages Wired and seperated with following Black Daisy Chain Negatives Red Positive or Ignition and White all Lights. Now I have labled most of all the sending units off the engine and understand were on the back of the guages they will be going but for some reason im left with a few wires i can not identify. I Undertand the Heavy Black and Red Battery and Ground But I have two Purple one Solid and One with a white stripe and a thinner Yellow with red stripe. I still have not wired the ignition switch just being very slow in doing so I do know off the ignition switch that orange cut off wire is a fused heavy Red to Battery So I can replace that no problem still trying to figure out the other problem of the 2 purple wires that end up if i followed them right into the harness.. Another question is on the lights to the guages should I just wire the lead to the positive Red which would mean all the lights stay on when when running or end up leaving the white end and when I get up to switch panel wiring designate that white to Guage lights on a switch Just something ponder but for now my goal is Getting this thing running. Again I thank all those for the help I have recieved so far. And yes I have loads of pictures and images from just about every angle of the wiring and engine so if you do need something to see better I know I have a picture of...Just ask can add more

Gauge lighting usually ties into the navigation (running) lights switch.
It assumes if its dark enough to needs gauge lights you should have the running lights on.
Yellow/red is the starter but needs to loop thru the neutral safety switch on the shifter
Purple/White I would trace out at the engine, seems to be one that does not match the old merc harness

Im begining to think the guy that ripped my wiring out did mention the motor hour guage did not work and deleted it from the guages. im begining to think that mught be the missing link purple wire.. also i found this merc PDF I enclosed I would take it I have a 9 Pin harness without having to pull it apart just as of yet but what are your thoughts on the engine harness pinout and colors in the PDF
