Need some advice my 2008 240 DA 5.0 mpi efi has water in the cylinders and needs to be rebuilt. it has 700 hrs on it 1,is it worth rebuilding? 2, or should I get a 305 long block?

Well I am going to pull the engine after the first of the year and maybe send to a machine shop. Does anyone have a lead on a good used 5.0 smartcraft?

It's a plain ole GM motor gen 1 small block. Engine has nothing to do with smartcraft, all that stuff will bolt onto whatever you get. Should be an easy find.

Looking for a good used 5.0 merc cruiser MPI EFI smart craft

Yes its a basic GM engine, but don’t order a car engine, the cam between car and boat is totally different.
I know people that did this, boat wouldn’t get on plane, had to pull the motor and install a boat cam.

The ecm is also tied in with your outdrive as well. So when ordering one it would need to be 5.7mpi and Bravo III, for instance.
How would the ecm know what drive is on the back and why would it matter?

Not actually "tied into", but "programmed for", say , the Bravo III.
The Bravo III engines have a different power curve on them due to the quite different ignition timing curve, necessitated for the dual prop arrangement that bites into the water different than a Bravo 1.

I don't believe that for a minute. Timing is all in at 1800 rpm regardless of what drive is hanging on the back
