More info with explanation would be great.
I don’t have an explanation other than it was required when I ordered mine in 2021. IIRC, there are alpha versions, bravo versions and inboard versions.

Mercruiser used to offer the same reman 357 engine for both bravo and alpha. The Bravo units was rated at 325 hp while the alpha only 300. Maybe the engines are detuned slightly to keep horsepower (or maybe limit top rpm) below 300 for the alpha applications? Tried to reconfirm online this morning but apparently that engine was dropped for the alphas. They were there though. I have a 357 4V alpha engine cover at the shop.
Hoping that isn't the case because I was planning to stuff that Tbolt 5 ignition in front of my Bravo on a vortec build I did. That would really suck.

Here’s my old one - which works and turns out it wasn’t the issue. So I ate $1k and have a spare. Says Bravo on it.

Well that part makes sense, I thought you were referring to the dif between a B1 and B3

I might have implied that, so my fault. It’s been two years and Covid brain in between.

I don't believe that for a minute. Timing is all in at 1800 rpm regardless of what drive is hanging on the back

Interesting. I looked over the actual timing curves and the one for the B3 was different than the B1. Could be mistaken.

Maybe not, all the years I've doing this stuff people swapping from 1's to 3's, never heard that before. Usually the 1's are on lighter boats. I would think the weight of the boat would have more to do with changing the timing curve.

Thanks Scoflaw for the info and insight.

I have actually been toying with the idea of swapping my B3 for a B1, since my boat is kind of a mutt, having a 454 Mag coupled to a B3 in a relatively small (22.5 ft x 3800 lbs) boat. Almost has too much bite at slow speeds.

Believe the 454 mag was only available with a B1 in that boat, that year.

That was a bargain at 1K, I just had to buy 1 and it was $2700
Again, I can’t remember what I paid, other than it was ridiculous and cut my Summer way short. Turned out to be a $70 crankshaft sensor that failed. Pretty much the only dang sensor that when it fails, doesn’t trip a code. (in and 05 that is)…..but no returns on the computer.
