Starting a thread to document my salon floor replacement project as it seems to come up a lot. Our boat is a 2002 410 Sundancer, chances are the project will be similar for other boats of the era

I’ve read the nightmare stories about the carpet removal and quickly realized why. If you just pull it up the carpet falls apart and leaves a ton of crap behind. For example:

Instead, methodically running a multi tool under the carpet while pulling back on it will cleanly release the glue and leaves behind very little residue. I actually think a little sticky glue left behind will be a good thing as I plan to leave the floor floating and will keep the pieces from shifting too much

here’s where I am after about an hour and a half.

Following…this is one the Admirals to too list. The issues I can’t wrap my head around are the best way to get rid of all the carpet on the vertical edges, and how to trim out the hatches, and what to do with the steps.

Watching and learning!

Soooo tempting. But I've heard so many horror stories of the 2" by 2" piece coming up instead of how this is going. You're a lucky man.

Looks great so far! Keep us updated!

Yeah, me too. I really think the key has been the multi-tool with the scraper blade attachment on full blast. It vibrates enough that the glue just completely lets go with the smallest bit of of pressure.

@dtfeld - for the hatches I plan to use jonny corners again. I did them on my last boat and liked them a lot. https://www.jonnycorners.com/

the vertical carpet and "baseboard" are staying carpet, at least for now. If this part of the project continues to go as planned I may tackle the stair treads, but we'll see. In front of the galley will be a challenge, there is a sloped part of the floor. I plan to make some relief cuts in the flooring and since its only 5mm thick I can bend it up.

Trimming the step into the aft cabin is still TBD

Jonnycorners if the one option I don't like. Most of the time we are barefoot and I'm afraid of "catching an edge" My prefered method is to have a trimmed edge flush with the hatches, just not sure the best way to accomplish.

With that said, I'm open to the idea... pros and cons both ways.

yeah thats a fair concern, we only had one hatch on our 290 and they laid very flat against the floor. My gripe with them is they scratched over time. I like the look, but might shop around a bit.

There have been a few similar threads on removing the carpet. No pun intended... Some have turned out beautiful and I'll be following on our 290 in the next year or so. Carpet has no business being on a boat IMO.

That one's a beauty. I like that hatch kit better too, any idea where it came from?

This going to be a great threat, thank you for starting it. My concerns with mine are the hatches, prefer no Johnny corners, I think it looks nice, but I want the hatches to blend in more than stand out. The other concern is the trim for the step into the aft cabin, which this pic looks fantastic

I snagged that pic from a thread I saw this past year. I'll try to find it. It was a great one, but I deleted all the threads I was following recently. Too many lol I'll find it and get back to you.

Hi Did you cut inspection holes in the bottom of your hatches??

Hi did you cut open inspection holes on the bottom of your hatches??

Yep - water was leaking from the hot water tank, running forward, and into the center bilge. I had a hard time figuring it out, so I was cutting inspection holes all over the place. I plan to put those screw in inspection covers when I seal it up again. I even cut the bulkhead away just aft of the forward bilge pump (giving access to the subfloor under the aft cabin) because water would pool there

I replaced the carpet going into the aft cabin and on stair treads when installing the floor. Went easy on the glue with intent of going back and redoing with wood. 5 years later.. still carpet!

I like that carpet - do you remember where you bought it? I might redo some of the vertical pieces eventually
