420 DA Thread

Hello fellow 42/44 Dancer owners....I want to let you know I just got my insurance renewal here in New Jersey. I have been claims free, in the $1400 to $1600 premium range for 10 years using NBOA as my broker. My renewal with Progressive for a 250K boat value and 500K liability (no changes) has now jumped to $2778.00, an 80% increase. Are most of you facing a similar situation on renewal? Or is it time for me to start shopping?

I just renewed with Amica for $1,676.00. $251k hull, 300k personal liability and 300k uninsured boater. The boat is covered year round but the premium stipulates a lay up period Nov 1 thru April 1.

I also have one for the 420/440 guys. I am looking for new cockpit carpeting, I found a few places on line including CSR sponsor Corinthian that have templates for the 2005 420DA but I haven't found one for a 440 DA. Anyone know if the 2005 420 carpet template is the same for a 2006 440? The sample template they emailed looks correct.

Count your blessings - my renewal three months ago - $11,600. In Florida all year. Valuation - $460,000. Lightning strike claim four years ago. Survey had no findings and listed Above Average. Only one company in London would take the coverage.

That is a lot of money Tom. I count my blessings for sure! However, I posted in 42/44 in order to get feedback on similar vessels just to try and get a handle on the 42/44 Sundancer insurance market.

Yea - Understand. I think, however, the entire nation will be seeing significant increases in insurance premiums and cancellations due to the claims and increases in overhead. The stress is about to drive me out of boating...

I had similar occurrence with AIG. They dropped us after 5years of zero claims. Am now with Travelers paying about $1100 more than previous.

I'm with Travelers as well. My policy renewed in October and went from $2,000 to $2,400. I'm pretty conservative and probably have too much coverage but seeing what Tom pays I have no complaints!

I am on an inland lake and stay in the water year round. For the 44DB and the 420DA for the past 6 or so years always been between $1,000-1,200/year and always through NBOA. It came time to renew last fall and they wanted $2,500. Went shopping and got Progressive down to $1,750 and went with it.

Do yourself a favor and make your own template. It is very easy and you know exactly what you get. Stop by HD or Lowes and get the heaviest plastic they have. Lay it out on the floor and mark the outline with a black sharpie. Cut out the pieces and lay them down to check fit. I do not like the factory carpets leave 3/4-1" gap around the edges that collect dirt/dust. I eliminated that by making it "wall to wall." Send it off to Corinthian and you will get back the shapes identical to what you send them. They tell you how to do it on their website. I also removed all of the male snaps from the cockpit floor and filled the holes with marine tex. Corinthian will sew heavy duty velcro on the back of the carpet and you can stick down the other side and it works very nicely.

I don’t think I am a fair comparison as I am in the Great Lakes 6 months of the year…… and stored 6 months…. My premium with NBOA is $800/yr….. same value and liability

a lot of my friends in Florida are drastically reducing their values to drop premiums….. like $500k boats and insuring for $100k and raising deductibles….. it’s an odds/risk thing

That's exactly what the insurance companies want us to do.... either way, they win!
I received a $542.00 increase last season to $2,454.00 from NBOA, after getting insurance through them for the last 15-years, with no claims.
I'll be shopping this season, if my renewal premium goes up more than 5%.

NBOA is just an agent, they have nothing to do with your premiums. When I used them they shopped for the best price.
You northern boaters make me feel better about my policy in Fort Myers FL. After Ian I was concerned about being cancelled even though I have not had a claim in 50 years including the hurricane.
I just paid the renewal which went from $4200 to $4700. That is $280K value and 12 months of use in a hurricane area. Considering the $2000-$2400 quotes I see above for 6 months and the $11k for ttmott
I will quit complaining!

Yes, reduction in premium to “normal” levels can be achieved by raising deductibles. Go from 1% to 5% and your premium becomes palatable. This reminds me of medical insurance these days. The fancy term is “cost sharing”

I just got a non-renewal notice from AIG today, eight years with them, claim free. They said 'this policy no longer meets Compay's revised minimum premium and/or minimum coverage requirements.'

Home, business, auto, boat - I always go for the high deductible.

As far as the boat goes, don't care about the little stuff. Do care about big damage or total loss.

Last claim was 2004, after experiencing the eye of CAT 4 Hurricane Charley. About $7,000 to repair the radar arch.

BEST !

Woody that is exactly what I got from AIG through NBOA. My agent at NBOA had very little information to offer except to offer Progressive (at an 80% increase from AIG) as they do not require a new marine survey. So, I called AIG directly to test the market and they eventually said they are only insuring recreational marine with minimum values of $350K. At this point I have a pretty good quote through Amica, although with a much higher deductible.

I called the broker last week, they told me AIG was sending out a notice in a month or so stating I would still be insured. That would be just before the policy ends, I'm sure with a big boost in premium. I told the broker to dump them, find me something else, waiting to hear back.

Well that is interesting....another wrinkle in the insurance saga. Are you going to hear out AIG to find out what the premium is going to be since you're still going to be renewed? Makes me wonder if I too will be receiving the letter?? Sticking with them might be (depending on the quote) the thing to do so as to avoid a full and expensive survey to get insurance. Most every company seems to be requiring it for coverage.

I'm definitely calling NBOA on Monday get get some answers.

AIG thru NBOA was requiring me to get a Survey last year at renewal (July). I told them I've only owned the boat for two years. I just gave you a survey two years ago. They said OK but I bet they require one this year. Since my boat is out of the water already for winter maybe I should just get it done and avoid a haul out charge....
