Hi everyone! Recently acquired a new to me Sea Ray SLX from 2005 and am finding a bit of work is needed for the stereo.

The boat is currently wired with six component satellites, each comproised of a 6.5" woofer and 1" tweeter. Six external crossovers are located under the port bow seating which also houses a four channel amp powering all six separates. Based on what limited playing I have done with the head unit, I believe this is currently wired in mono (heaven only knows what reason) as fade and balance from the head unit have no impact.

Under the bow seating on the starboard side is a bridged two channel amp powering a 10" sub located under the helm seat.

I am currently weighing the pros and cons of replacing the satellite speakers. Most aftermarket speakers I have found are coaxial two ways, but I cannot find much for project records of others replacing their speakers.

  • If I go this route, am I best served just leaving a disconnected tweeter in the existing locations?
  • Have others predominately replaced component systems with coaxials?
  • If replaced with coaxials, is it suggested to rip out the external crossoverse as well?

I have done a couple of these boats. At the time JL Audio had component speaker systems that we used. They were a great replacement as they had proper dimensions and a major sound upgrade over the existing setup. As you probably know by now JL has discontinued that component line. I am not aware of a marine solution for your system although there are some automotive systems out there. They would fill the holes but the performance and longevity in a marine environment would be lacking. Coaxials would be about the only logical solution. I removed all of the crossovers and associated components when I refit those systems. You could leave the tweeters in place with the crossovers and they would still work with a coaxial speaker system but that would be a lots of highs. Do some tuning before you make the final decision to remove them. Or maybe remove the tweeters and come up with a creative cover or lighting option? Challenging project but I'm sure someone else is trying to figure it out too. An answer will come up eventually.

I replaced my MOMO on my 300DB with Polk mm6502. I just reused the existing crossovers. Didn’t bother replacing them with the new crossovers that came in the box. I think Polk still makes this line.

I wasn't aware of the Polks. Could be a good solution. On backorder at Crutchfield with no known ship date. Maybe another vendor has them out there. Haven't used a lot of Polk but what I have was good quality for the price point.

I put Polks in the boat I have now as well. I'm the only non-JL user on this whole site!
