Does anyone have experience using other product/s other than Walker to clean AIRSEP filters? Or should i stick to using the Walker kit only?

Our marina manager says, Dawn dish wash detergent work just as well for cleaning. I have never heard this before.

Dawn may work for the cleaning part but what are you going to spray on it after it's clean? That's what traps the dust particles and keeps the air going to the engine clean.

For the few bucks a K&N kit costs I'll stick with those.

Mark - when you pulled off your airsep was there any oil that leaked out? I am guessing that ours have never been cleaned so we purchased a cleaning kit from Cummins. Today I had some time to pull off the airseps and when I took the first one off, I had some oil drip down into the bilge. Since I was short on time I just replaced it and called my mechanic. He said it's normal but there was a pretty decent stream of oil that leaked out. Enough to worry me. I'm not going to attempt this project until I have some time to do it properly. I'm especially not looking forward to removing the airsep from the port engine!

Just wondering what your experience was and also - do you know how often this should be done? Annually? Lastly - if ours are now 6 years without a cleaning, is it better to just get new filters and start new?

Thanks,
Sandy

Walker has a cleaning recommendation on their website. Here it is: http://www.walkerairsep.com/pdf/tech/Cleaning_Instructions.pdf

Also, if you call them and talk to their technical person, he is wonderful and will tell you everything you need to know and then some. Also, if it were me I'd get new ones and start from a clean slate.

I keep 2 sets of Airseps. When I exchange them I take the dirty ones home where I clean and oil them then store in plastic bags. When it's time to clean the filters on my engines I simply swap them. Works out great!

Hi Sandy, I have CAT's so it is a little different setup and no I don't have a stream of oil... Maybe one of the Cummins guys will jump in with their experiences. I do mine annually usually.

Sandy do you also have CCV filters? Our Cats have air filters and a air tube going to the CCV filters. Our CCV filters will start to accumulate oil and are recommended to replace every 1000 hours (I do 500 then change). He oil is from the air being brought into the filters and over time the molecules of oil within the air will form back into oil.

Sandy - my CATs may be different, but I have a check valve on the oil return line. If this gets clogged, oil will back up in your filter. If you have them, they are not expensive to replace...

Thank you! I'll check that out the next time I'm on the boat. I spoke with Walker this morning and they said that we can just clean our filters for now and then order a field kit to replace the filters, o-rings, etc in the fall when we service the boat. I will make sure to put down pads to absorb any oil that might leak when I do remove the filters. Boy do I have a lot to learn about diesel engines!

So, I just serviced my walker airseps. The indicator that I needed to do this was some oil splatter out of the relief valve on the round collector can prior to the airsep. Now that I’ve serviced with the full kit, I’m still getting oil spatter out of the relief valve on the collector can. No other indications of a problem (RPM, speed, engine temp, manifold temp, turbo boost are all normal). I thought maybe it could be residual oil in the collector can, but I cleaned it real nice. Took it for a ride, and no spatter. I ran again and after 1.5 hrs, got some spatter. Any thoughts?
