Dealership Service Advice

It shouldn't cost you. You did not do it. After tear down find out what happened and go to the other dealer and tell them your findings and call Ford and open a complaint

I would bet they put their newest guy on it at the first place. If it was fine when it came in it should be better when it leaves. Not the other way around.

I was a mechanic for 20 years, if you don't make a note of a major issue when the car came in you will lose in court. I Know

I believe I have some closure on this.

As you know, I took the vehicle to another shop to have the timing chain redone and told the previous dealership not to touch it. The new shop called me this morning to give me the news. As it turns out, it's not the timing chain, but 3 spark plugs (the new ones installed) that were cracked causing major misfires. Thank goodness I took it somewhere else. He said the truck is running great now, with no signs of a timing chain issue, and he said they will go over the previous work the other shop did to make sure it's okay before giving it back to me.

3 months without a truck because the 'clown shop' couldn't install spark plugs properly - and when I brought it up, they said it 'couldn't be the plugs' and that 'they already re-checked'. They were all set to tear apart my motor, replace the timing chain and lobes, charge $3k, and it still wouldn't have fixed the problem.

Can you guess which place is going to get all of my business for repairs as well as when I'm in the market for a new truck? ;)

Wow. Im glad you had this outcome. So many people get screwed by someone with limited skills and a big ego.

Cork soakers. Always go back and check you work. It's usually something easy. I'd chew their arse a new one. At least send them the freaking spark plugs.

I'm really glad it worked out for you and you took it to a dealership that has a conscience thanks for sharing the story I'm glad you're happy

I have been in a mechanical of some sort career for over 28 years. I am a firm believer in analytical troubleshooting. I grew up in the auto business when we would bust and harass the parts changer troubleshooters. Called it throwing darts . Unfortunately that has become more acceptable today especially how complex modern vehicles have become. But the issue with this truck was the basics. And either they were that incompetent (like I said on an earlier post, they put the new guy on it) or sadly they are that corrupt that they purposely do stuff like this to screw people out of their money. I have seen both. You should not pay a dime to the old dealer and if you did you need to get every penny back. Glad it worked out for you.

Wow. I had 100000 service done on my F150 and as I left it ran rough. I brought it back and they replaced the coil (or something). Still wasn’t running right.

brought it to my local independent mechanic and… you guessed it….cracked spark plug. I never went back. Glad yours is fixed now. Stressful read!

Well they only cracked three out of six spark plugs so it's only half I just can't believe they did that I'm glad you got it sorted out

F150s / well the Triton v8 have a poor spark plug design, the whole head design was a disaster. Which led to the poor design for the spark plugs. It is a great engine when running properly. But it is a throwaway motor. Once it goes bad there is no rebuilding them. It was a rube goldberg design. More complicated than necessary. Oil passages too small to clean.

Interesting
My 2012 V8 was traded last week at 176000 miles. Up until the last month it was the most reliable vehicle I ever purchased, which seems a little surprising for the brand. Virtually no repairs except wear items. Alas i did not buy another one though. Needed something that’s a bit easier to park!

It’s amazing the run around you can get from a dealer service department. I just had a customer with a 2018 RAM 1500 3.6 with these symptoms:
Lost 2 gallons of coolant in 3 months, no external leaks, white sweet smelling smoke from the exhaust, exhaust smell inside the radiator, misfire on 2 adjacent cylinders.
Doesn’t take a dummy to tell you it’s a cylinder head or head gasket issue. He took it to the local dealer, and finally 3 weeks later they determined it’s a head gasket, after dropping the oil pan checking for sludge, replacing the water pump because they thought that was the issue and a few other items fired from the parts cannon.

It’s still under warranty, he’s hoping their repair skills are better than their diagnostic skills.

Well I hope it wasn’t the place where I took my truck. They’re also a Dodge dealer.

Could have used the wrong weight oil or did not fill it properly,. I had a 2017 f 150 and had timing chains done 2 times. Have them fix it and fix it right, then dispute it on the credit card and go from there. Or take to a different dealer and dispute the bill from the first shop

Ive done a ton of reading on the ailments of Ford VVT engines mainly the ecoboost but it plagued the 5.0 also.

There are upgrade kits for timing chain, guides etc but the single best upgrade is to the oil pump itself.

This is why I won’t buy a new VVT with direct injection. Nothing to wash the back of the valves.

Look into a catch can. You’ll freak how much oil you’ll dump out at oil change intervals.

Years ago my dad had bought a new vehicle. Only a couple days later it wasn't running right, it'd die and then go. So he limped into the GM dealer late on a Friday. A couple mechanics stayed to see if they could solve his problem. They couldn't figure it out. It was past their quitting time, they were frustrated. The analyzer wasn't telling them what to do.

He said 'let do this the old fashioned way', lets verify we got spark and fuel. They blew him off at first but finally gave in. It wasn't getting fuel. The fuel gauge on the new vehicle didn't work, it was out of gas.

I had 300k on my 1999 when I sold it. Changed plugs and oil regularly. Like I said when they are good they are good. Takes one bad mechanic or pure neglect to ruin one though. Glad the OP took it someplace else. I believe they would have destroyed it .
