I've got a 1997 370 Express Cruiser with 8G8D gel batteries (12v 225Ah 1150CCA) and my starboard one has tested poorly and needs replacing. I figure if I change one, the other isn't far behind (tested slightly better), however, I'm in Bermuda and the availability and cost for a new one is difficult and expensive - at least $1700 for one.

Has anyone replaced their gel batteries with another option, perhaps 2 or 3 smaller batteries in parallel?

I've not had gel batteries. We routinely migrate toward good AGMs, mostly due to reduced service requirements and reduced off-gassing. (We tend toward Lifeline or Odyssey, but there are other less expensive options.) And regular flooded lead-acid batteries are pretty good bang for the buck, if you can deal with periodic service.

You might check your charger manual, see how much flexibility it gives you for voltage or profile selection.

Smaller batteries in parallel can work well, but the potential footprint tends to need some study if you're already starting out with 8Ds and adjacent real estate doesn't give you much flexibility. 3x G31s can often give you more capacity and higher cranking amps compared to a single 8D, though.

I would have expected your boat came with either dual Group 27 or Group 31 in parallel, and that is more than enough to get you CAT's started, and provide for house loads. However, if you have a 8D battery box, you can likely fit 3 x group 31's or Group 27's in there, but you're going to have to rewire for that installation.

3 group 31's might have more capacity than a single 8D.

Yes, I was just having a look at the original parts manual and it lists 'Battery - Group 27 Douglas'. Looks like that's going to be the way I need to go, at least from a cost standpoint.

Group 27 or 31's will work based on local availability...
