How fast is your boat?

Wanted to see what others were getting on their speedo. I registered 48mph today and was super happy. Full tank of gas and two people aboard.

Initially, I thought I would only get 40mph tops. But today I messed around, raised the trim a tad and 48 was in sight. Big difference between night and day.

Check it with a GPS for a more acurate reading. Boat speedo's are not known for their accuracy. Your boat probably goes a couple mph faster than your speedometer is telling you. I would think a boat like yours with a 1/2 tank and no one else aboard would do 50.

My 270 will never see 48 MPH until I get the "rat on steroids" motor. But on a good day, with not too much fuel and the 23 pitch prop, I think I can do 40 at about 4600 rpm. :smt001

But I always plug my ears when I do that. I hate the sound of a big block coming apart. :smt013

If you are using a GPS, then you get speed over ground, SOG. You have to add or subtract the water current speed.

RiverRat is exactly right about speedo's however, I've never seen one slow, but always fast. Speedo's are very well known for crushing guys ego's

Likely you're actual speed was anywhere from 1-4 MPH slower. But, if you saw a that big of an increase from what you generally run and the only difference was you trimmed out more, you may have more left. You absolutely need to be trimming as you come off plane and speed increases. It's a fine art you'll need to be able to feel, hear and most importantly see based on RPM and speed.

With my BIII, I'm trimmed out by the time I am on plane and don't need to trim anymore until I'm getting up in the 50+ MPH range. HP hulls, such as stepped hulls, can get up on plane and run all day cruising without any trim because of the design of the hull; steps and running pad.

Back to your question, MPH by my speedo is past 65 and pegged for a while so speedo means nothing on mine. I know mine is about 1 MPH fast per every 10MPH on the speedo so at 50MPH mine is showing 54-55 MPH. When it gets to 65MPH registered on the speedo I know I'm at 59-60MPH.

Best speed by GPS so far (and I rarely have the GPS and mine updates sloooowwww if it doesn't drop the sat.'s) has been a hair under 66MPH.

Just noticed you're in Colo also. Higher alt. will rob you of power compared to sea level so your speed appears to be pretty good!

Jim,

Must be nice 65MPH. I'm feeling good at 45-48 with my 350Mag and all the stuff I've got on my 240  Will be interesting to see if the 2000' makes a difference next week when I'm in PCB for the CSR trip.

I've had mine up to 51 mph according to the speedo. That was with me on the boat with a full load of fuel. I have the factory aluminum prop. I have yet to check it with a gps as I always seem to forget to bring it with me. I was hitting 4800 rpm's before I was completly at wot I guess a ss prop would probably give a little more speed but like the idea that the aluminum prop will take one for the team if I hit something.

I have reached 49 with smooth water and the B3 trimed just right. 5.0L. But on average with folks on board, fuel, coolers ect...about 45 is pretty good. Both Speeds are by GPS, I never pay much attention to the dash speedo. It does show couple of miles faster than the GPS.

Jim's got the Fastest 240 Sundeck on the water that we know of. I still have that mpeg of you haulling but around the corner in one of my computers.

Chuck, you won't get much of a oppertunity to open it up wide at PCB except in the Grand Lagoon. From Deep Water Point to Bay Point entrance is the Indy 500. All the speed boats want to open it up right in there. :smt101

40.1 mph GPS SOG withe twin 8.1s turning 4800 rpm ... done it twice ... no fun in a boat this size. cruising easy at 31 mph GPS SOG @ 3600 rpm is my favorite speed and rpm

I hope you hit 20 hours prior to trying this :smt009

My spedo reads 43MPH at best. I have yet to run it WOT in still water though. I slowed the idel a bit so I can troll behind the boat. Dont know if that would affect the top speed or not.

48mph-53mph GPS loaded down with gear and trimmed up i bit at WOT. Once you reach WOT start creeping the trim up until you see the in-dash speedo jump about +5mph... That your sweet spot.

Make your you throttle it down before taking sharp turns  You cannot corner well when there is barley any hull left in the water.

This thread has picked up some. Good to see that. Sounds like everyone is roughly in the same mph bracket.

ruf1967 - I'm running whatever came from the factory. No upgrades yet.

Searay Jim - Yeah us men have it tough up here. Haha. I
m happy with 48, wonder if I can go even faster? I don't think I want to try my fate on this.

First Born - I was around 7 hour doing this. Did I hurt my engine or anything else? I only tried it twice. I hope not?

mrtopknight - Oh believe me I am not that stupid to turn with my hull out of the water so far. I'm usually 3/4 way down on the trim.

That's what I was thinking. I'm still under 10 hours so whacking the throttle isn't even being considered yet.

w/ the 5.0 BIII, I top out around 42-44 gps w/ 1/3 tank and 450lbs of passengers.

I generally cruise at 3200 rpm at 32-33mph w/ 6-10 souls and all the gear on board.

some high speeds being quoted on here.

My 200 select with 5.0mpi (260hp) and alpha 1 with a Hi five prop wont go over 47mph (as measured on the GPS) at sea level. Even with the factory vengeance 3 blade stainless it wouldnt go more than 49mph, despite a few reviews/tests saying they managed to get about 52-55mph out of it.

And yes I was trimmed out and reaching max recommended revs for the engine.

J - Don't believe all the "Boat Test" figures. They are good to find a starting point but I have found in many of their reviews those folks are a little off the mark. :smt018
