Happy Thanksgiving. At the sea trial of our new to us 2000 Sun Dancer 260 5.7, Bravo III the Captain said there was 1-1/2" of play at the drive and that it should be checked. It was checked and the pin was replaced. Still has that 1-1/2" of play at the drive. Is there cause for concern?

When you say PIN ....

Wondering if he meant 1.5" up/down due to play in the trim cylinder pin(s)? Which pin?

I think he is referring to the steering pin being replaced. This goes in the gimbal ring. If there is still play, it is possible the gimbal ring is bad. To replace the motor must be removed, but beyond that, it is relatively straight forward wrench work.

Worn gimbal rings are relatively common. It is often caused by failing to keep those two nuts at the top of the transom assembly properly torqued and/or corrosion.

There should be essentially no play in the drive if you stand behind the vessel and try to move it side by side with your hand.
