Another Alamitos Bay boater here. We are over in the Marina Pacifica slips behind the Ralph’s shopping center.

Were you on your boat this weekend? We stopped by Alamitos on our way back from Newport on Sunday. I saw a 340 Sundancer in the channel like yours.

We grabbed an end tie and went to the farmers market and then stopped by to check out our new slip. We saw our new CSR neighbors “Dlcable” before heading back to Cabrillo for the last time.

Cool picture of some of the boats lining up in the turning basin for the 2021 Newport Christmas parade.

Yes, we did a lap through Huntington Harbor Saturday night with a group of friends to see the lights and then stayed on the boat that night. Sunday morning my dad came over for coffee and we took a quick run out and around the obstacle course of cargo ships.

We made the move yesterday before the storms hit. Our new home in Alamitos Bay.

We were not in Catalina this weekend, but I’ve been looking for any updates I can find. It seems it was a 50’ and the deceased was a 65 yr old woman. It sounds like they took on water over night. The reports are really short on details. Haven’t been able to find boat brand info yet.

I ordered a high water alarm this morning. This is a sad a scary deal if you sleep out in your boat.

@Sea to See - I was on my dock last night when one of my dock neighbors returned from Catalina. They were moored 4 boats away from the one that sank. They slept through the actual sinking and yelling that occurred at 4 AM… but when they awoke they were told by one of the eyewitnesses that the boat sank in 90 seconds.

They also said that a local mechanic said that he refused to work on the boat (late model Bayliner) after the owners did not listen to him… And that he told him the boat wasn’t safe. Apparently there were issues with the hoses coming from the seacocks that were bulging out much like an aneurysm bulges out on an artery.

They said that the woman who drowned had helped one of her friends get out through the forward hatch who had a prosthetic leg. But then somehow one of her own legs got tangled in some rope or others debris and she was unable to free her self as the boat sank. The harbormaster ran to get some scuba tanks to try a rescue but by the time he got down to the sunken boat it was only a recovery.

On my boat when the emergency bilge activates there is an alarm that goes off but I realized it’s been a while since I’ve tested it to make sure that it still works… This is a sad reminder…

That is so sad. It’s crazy how little time there is to react.
We replaced a bunch of hoses this year after we bought the boat. I don’t think they had been done in a while. This is a sobering reminder to prioritize maintenance.
I’m definitely going to be checking my pumps this week and will be adding that high water alarm before anyone sleeps on my boat again.

We were in Avalon for the long weekend and had several friends call/text us about the loss. I asked the harbor patrol about it and they didn't have much to add other than what was in the news reports.
Our boat has alarms when the bilge pumps are activated, but I also added these water alarms near my hot water heater and other places in the hull incase of a line rupture. They are available at Home Depot.

    Hey Jim,

That looks fun. We’re going to be up in Dana Point in a guest slip for Ohana Fest. Close, but not close enough to Huntington Beach…

    Enjoy!

We had a good time at the Air Show on Sunday. There seemed to be more boats there than the last time we attended in 2019.

Apparently this "radio check" service has been available to San Diego area boaters for a long time. Does anyone know if there is something comparable in the Newport/Long Beach area?
