Missing kayaker lost on Lake Erie at Sheffied Lake Nov. 5th not found zero traces of him. Can't understand why with all the cool places to Kayak this time of year they go out on the Lake. Looking at the kayak he was using it's not like he was fishing. In November once the water is so cold that your survival rate is next to nothing that's the last place you should go kayaking unless you have the right gear. Sorry to the family my heart goes out to them but such a poor decision.

I’ve never understood the draw. We sat and watched three go out at sunset the night before last. No life jackets, no lights. They went to the office the next morning to complain that they were almost hit by a boater. Daughter did her job and took the complaint and description, MR came as well. First words other than hello, why were you even out after sunset? He issued all three a warning for being out after sunset without proper equipment

My son kayaks through the winter on Lake Michigan, but in a dry suit, life jacket with a rescue harness and light., He carries a VHF and EPIRB, Triathlete, former lifeguard. Stays close to shore, always files a time and location float plan with us and checks out and back in with us. Always leaves himself a daylight window. Yes, things can still go wrong, but at least he is well prepared.

When we get to middle age we tend to slow down alot and watch our lives go by. He lives every minute of his.

I congratulate you for teaching your son to respect the dangers of being out on the water. He seems to know the risk and is fully prepared but he is the exception to the kayakers around here. At one point the MRO sat and waited for kayakers to come back in. Their goal was to educate. In two hours they issued 12 warnings and one BWI. They just don’t think the rules of boating applies to them. Kinda like bicycles on the roads

Agreed. Since kayaks are so inexpensive and accessible with almost no learning curve, many people don't respect the risk.

You think it’s time to require EPIRs for all paddle craft?

No, I don't. We don't need more regulations from big brother. If there is risk in kayaking, the people that wish to partake in that sport know about that risk and know about all the equipment, including EPIRB, being available. It is their choice to use or not use. It's called being in a free country. The regulations should be considered for people's actions that endanger others but they have the right to take risks that endanger only themselves. My humble opinion of course.

True but it sure would save millions in rescue operations every year.. maybe even some lives. We spent three days looking for a kayaker after his boat washed ashore. York County did the same up near Sara’s Creek when that boat washed up under the bridge. Nothing like the boat on the Lakes. I imagine that search lasted a week before it went to a recovery mode. As boaters I’m sure folks got upset when it came to getting a license and basic equipment. EPIR wouldn’t be that intrusive to a basic equipment for kayakers. It’s just a idea that would need some work.

I do see your point tho

I do appreciate the aggravation presented when people have to endanger themselves to rescue people that got into their predicament through foolish behavior, but if you are in the profession of rescue, that's what you sign on for. If you are just a private citizen, then it again is a free country....take the risk of attempting that recue or walk away.

I just want to stifle this thinking that the government has all reaching power to control its citizens as it sees fit. One day you may have to wear a football helmet to drive a car. How about having the breath analyzer built into the car so everyone gets analyzed every time. That has actually been proposed.

As an edit, I do apologize for getting off track. The guy in that kayak that was found far away, may have just been going to get a pack of smokes.

EPIRB is a choice flag on the other hand should be a regulation if on large bodies of water
