Memorial Day Weekend 2023

If you're anywhere in the Great Lakes region, this had to be one of the best Memorial Day weather windows ever. I remember lots of chilly, damp holidays over the years. We have noticed small demand on the facilities here and in Mackinaw City this weekend. A friend on Traverse Bay (Elk Rapids) said the same. Has economic conditions put the brakes on the boating world? Fuel was $5.68/gal at the one marina I took time to notice. Perhaps just too early for the crowd to venture this far north.

Well saved my first fellow boater yesterday…. Somehow he fell down this narrow gap.. visiting a fiends boat…. I hear this commotion turn around and see his little bald head go under water.. grabbed his shirt and pulled him up….. funny as Phuck…. He is a seasoned boater I said what in the world are you doing….. he goes I slipped …. Ya no shit…. all he cared about was his phone…. Then later the bleeding :)

Well, I was supposed to launch on the 26th but I spent most my day on the 24th in the emergency room and been laying around in my underwear in bed since...boat launch rescheduled for 6/2, there's a good chance it'll happen this time.
Sorry to hear…hope you feel better soon.

Was fantastic weather here on the south end. Had a great day fishing Sunday, and just hanging at the marina today. Marina and especially the ramp were eerily quiet all weekend for how nice the weather was.

We go to the race every year. 48 years in a row. Just before the National Anthem, we unfurl my flag. This will be the 12th time that I have been on worldwide TV showing our American flag. We were on TV for about four seconds.

you can view the video here. We were on TV about halfway through.

Even though it's 9 hours to the boat, I'm spoiled living so close to the Warhawk Air museum. We got a flyby this morning. Surprisingly, I actually thought to catch them on video as they go by on their return trip. If you have a sound bar, be sure to crank the bass.

Great picture!

The sh*t weather continues here in NC, washout rain Sat/Sun, clouds and mist on Monday now just clouds. We have not seen 75deg since last Friday - turned the heat back on over the weekend.

I forgot that a local bar owner and friend opened early so a few of us could watch the Monaco Grand Prix on the big screen.

He cooked breakfast and poured Bloody Mary's until we tapped out.

We used to have a local bar do this for each race. The bar manager was an F1 nut, like myself. Well, he moved on and all the fun came to an end. Hopefully with the increased popularity there will be more venues to go enjoy the race with likeminded fans.

For many years it was held at the International Motor Sports Research Center in Watkins Glen where I live, but that came to an end when the curator retired.

I remember sitting on the back tire of Jim Clark's Lotus one year there were so many people there.

The weather was better than most Memorial Days in memory. 80 degrees and zero wind. The quivering aspens were not even quivering. Family and friends were there and the chicken barbecue was awesome. It was so quiet all you could hear were birds chirping and deer rustling. The closest town with people was 6 miles away. Being in a valley with no local towers, what more could you ask for than not having the bother of cell service?

Memorial Day on the water has to be the worst time of the year. All the idiots with new boats and all the oldsters that forgot how to act are out on the sandbar with music a blaring. And don't even think about all the hazards while trying to ply the waters.

We may have done it in the past when time was precious, but now with retirement in hand Wednesday's on the River are better and better.

Wait a Minute! You drive 9 hours to get to the boat?

We had a great Memorial weekend. Lake wasn't too busy, but more people are finding my hidden coves. Weather was perfect. Just me and the admiral. Very relaxing. Marina where I buy gas was getting $4.69/gallon. Marina where I keep my boat wanted $6.96! F@ckers.
