The boot stripe on the bottom of my hull is really looking lame. I think its about time to remove and replace. Does anyone know of a good source for stripes for my boat. The boat is 37' so i would require somewhere in the neighborbood of 80' of material. Color is dark blue btw.

Norcal...any ideas?? I have heard from Ron that you were the man for this type of thing!!

I re-striped mine this past fall, got the stripes from either West Marine or Boater's World. They both stock them in quite a few colors and sizes. I would measure what you have and then head in there to order the exact color and size you want. Putting the stripes on was easy, have fun taking the old off. I ended up buying a heat gun, that worked okay. The residue from the really old stripes was hard to get off, that took a lot of time and goo-gone.

ha! goo-gone. thats what i used about 7 years ago on my upper stripes. that stuff worked fairly well but the whole process was a B-ach to do.

is there any difference in the quality of these stripes? I have heard there was by a buddy and dont want to make a mistake and cheap out.

I don't know about the quality. The ones I got seemed fine, color throughout the stripe, not just painted on like some. If I have to re-do them in five years, that is fine. Newer stripes come off pretty easy, and they are cheap enough.

Mark, I've re striped two of my boats, a 1992 370 DB that had a 2" dark blue and a 2" metallic blue stripe, and my current boat that has the 2" black and 2" gold. Both times a bought the stripes from a local auto body supply store (Till Paint). They sell a lot of auto pin striping tape made by a company called Pro Stripe that also offers the 2" wide stuff in lots of different colors. I also have a good technique for puting them on straight but I'd have to explain it over the phone. Send me a P.M. if you want me to call you. Mark

Pauls Distributors in Freeport NY has many different aftermarket
marine grade tapes. Looks like you will need to buy one 150 ft roll of tape or two 50 ft rolls.

Acetone is faster than goo gone.

Where do you get it? I tried everything I could think of - even carb. cleaner and Hydrochloric acid didn't work. I was bummed enough to try those on my glecoat, but seems like there was no damage.:smt038

MEK also works well but doesn't evaporate as fast as acetone. Hard plastic "single-edge razor blades" are available from body shop supply stores to fit any blade holder and work well to scrape the softened goo without scratching the gelcoat.

Home Depot and Lowes has big cans of acetone. I use it every year to get the stupid NJ Reg sticker off and replace with the new one. Give some to your woman - save money on nail polish remover.

Yep, like they said. Hardware stores usually sell it too.

How's this for a striping job! This is EVERYTHING I hate about mid 80s to early 90s SRs, carried to the limit. Gotta love that satellite dish on the arch. Not sure if this boat is pimped or red-necked!?

Less is more Ron....

Dont insult Rednecks, they have far more taste than to go all "Don Johnson" on their ride. I think MTV got hold of this and did a "pimp my boat-ride"

OMG!!!

That Looks Awesome! Whats the deal with the picture of the house? Is it included. Have you ordered your stripe kit yet Ron? Th only thing that boat needs is a huge metallic panther on the side, or a gold Firebird on the foredeck!

I re-striped mine early last year and a friend's last October.

I have a great source for the tape and can get metallics and even original Sea Ray colors. I can get 2" in 50' rolls. I have a source that does this for a living and he recommends only 2 brands.

I am in Pennsylvania freezing my ass off at the moment but when I get back to Calif. and thaw out I can get you some details.

Are you planning to haul the boat? This job would be near impossible in the water.

Shawn, I think I sent you a PM about this ( I can't remember) I would like to get the info on the Burgandy one. I believe yours is the same, I want to get rid of the deck stripe like you did as well. Need you to email me pics, to see what it looks like without them. Your avatar pic is a bit small to see close up. Also, If you could elaborate on how you got your old ones off. Welcome to the frozen tundra! Now you know what the rest of us get to live with, you picked a crappy time to come, right in the middle of this years big snow!

You did send me a PM and I read it and then did something else and forgot about it. I did not remove the old stripes. They were gone when I bought the boat. Even though it looks clean in the picture, I never really liked it. I always felt something was missing. Here are a couple of pics without upper stripes. The second picture is before I painted the burgundy insert on the arch. That was done with a rattle can I found at OSH. The color was a great match.

As you know, there is a double boot stripe. The mauve one looked like crap so I had the yard remove it when they painted the bottom 2 years ago.

Here are a couple of pics with the new upper stripes. Rather than maroon and mauve I used silver to tie in the grey canvas. I think it really updated the boat.

Shawn send me the info when you get home, and where did you get the 340 decal? Thanks looks great! And yes, I do like the look of the deck stripe when it's in good shape.
