OFFICIAL 390/40 Motor Yacht Thread

Pinstriping: Looking to replace the striping on our 2003 390 MY due to dock scuffs, and peeling. Anyone know if the attached photo is the original colours, and sizing? Sorry forgot to take photo of the widths, but guesstimate looks like 2" black, with 1/4" duo colour. Any suggestions on where to order what looks like a Duo-colour (we think it may be Gold Starfire #25 3M, or Gold Metallic #03, over black. Any recommendations for colour schemes, will be seriously considered. thanks again to everyone. Learn so much from every single thread.
I think this is the original, at least on the 2008, but it could have changed over the years:

I think this may be a better complement to the rest of the boat's colors. Not sure what the gold on yours contributes.

Our 420 had the black and gold and I swapped over to the black and silver and really updated the look.

Hi we have a 2006 with two mysterious water sources. The first is behind the starboard engine. We find fresh water behind the engine after running the boat. Based on the above I am now wondering if it is leaking from the fresh water system (e.g., master head sink) accumulating then running forward when we come off plane. The second is on the stringer on the outside of the starboard engine and also shows up after running the boat. In front and back of the water is dry so not running forward or aft. I an wondering if it is coming from under the fuel tank and ultimately from vent on the side of the boat. Please let me know if you have any thoughts.
We determined that the overflow exhaust was leaking at the engine but only under load.

Alnav,

Thanks for the reply.

Could be the door threshold as lots of water came under the cockpit plexiglass doors. Will look into resealing this.

I opened the electrical panel when engine heaters were installed a year or so ago and I am pretty sure that area is very well sealed with inner fiber glass. Also, there was no water anywhere in engine room. If water got behind electrical panel, likely there would be water in engine room as there are holes in floor for wires going into engine room.

Thanks again.
Mike

Electrical Panel
I see both the main distribution and 12 V DC panels are hinged but both are mounted to a larger wood veneer panel that is also hinged. How does one open the large veneered panel? I don't see any hardware.

Been a while, but I am pretty sure you remove screws on top outer panel. The metal panel will open. Look inside the panel on each side, there are screws. Remove these and larger panel will open on hinges. Of course, you should make sure shore power is disconnected b4 accessing this area.

Curious...what year did Sea Ray start producing the 390 MY and what was the last year (as a 40 MY)? Ours is a 2003 and #538 which I assume is the sequence for the 2003 model year

According to the Facebook 390/40 MY Owner's Group:
From Sea Ray, "The 390MY was built from 2003-2005. The same boat was designated as a 40MY and was built from 2006-2008. We built 231 390MY’s and 88 40MY’s."

Dumb question, but has anyone been able to open the aft cockpit window? On our boat the forward window slides opens, but the aft window does not move. Seems like it could open as it is in a track just like the forward window that does open. If this can open, would really increase cockpit airflow.
Thanks
Mike

They both open. Your track probably needs to be cleaned out. If it's stuck don't pull very hard on the provided knob or you'll break the window. Push rearward on the white slider window frame on the outside to free it. Be careful.

Followup on prior post regarding sliding cockpit windows....aft windows were held in place by black caulk. I cut it out and now both windows slide open. Not sure why one of prior owners did this other than he had leaks. I took a hose to window after removing caulk and there are no leaks.

The 390 Motor Yacht is a very good Great Loop Boat. We are almost 2/3 of the way thru the Great Loop and the 390 MY has done amazingly well. Not too small and not too big. Air draft is low enough so that you can take any of the several routes. We travel slow most of the time, but being able to go fast at times is a really nice option.

I like the boat more now than the day I bought it, which is a first for me. All in all a great set of features for a reasonable price.

Glad you got it sorted out. I open mine almost every time we cruise.

We live on ours in Chicago. It's not a dock queen as we take it out alot and do Lake Michigan loops with her. Love the layout and really like the control I have when docking. Sweet boat!

Just curious if others have a slow draining cockpit sink. I ran a mini drain snake hoping I could either push or pull the blockage to no avail. The problem is 10 ft from the sink drain which is where the drain hose passes thru the floor with a huge bundle of wires just under the helm seat. This is an impossible area to be noodling around with. I'll probably have to run a new drain hose around this area into the ER and to the thru hull on the starboard side

Mike, never had any issues with mine. I wonder if you could blow/suck out the line, seems like a wet/dry vacuum hose would fit nicely over the drain.

I'll give that a try. Thanks

Our cockpit sink will drain very slowly every so often, so I keep a small plunger on board. After a few pumps, sink drains quickly again. This sink drains directly overboard and does not go to sump. Possible obstruction you found is the anti-siphon loop before thru hull.

Greetings! I am new to this Forum and just spent most of my day reading the 32 pages of history. Very interesting and I learned the answers to a couple items I have been wondering about. I have been boating for many years and have had previous twin engine boats, but all gas including a 2004 Sea Ray 280 and a 2004 Cruisers 370. For the past 6 years we had switched to sailing a 44' Hunter. We are now back to power and closed on a 2004 Sea Ray 390 MY with the Cummins 480CEs about a month ago. Lot's to learn. We love the boat layout, the hardtop, cockpit air/heat and the overall spaciousness considering it is not 46 or 48' long. Some of the posts about fuel tank replacement and engine rebuilds are quite scary.

We did have an ex Cummins Tech with lots of years of experience check out the engines and we believe we are OK. During the Sea Trial we ran at 28.3 MPH at 2200 RPMs. Both engines achieved 2650 RPMs at WOT so we believe the engines are propped correctly. Top speed was 32.3 MPH. The engines have 1,080 hours and the Onan Gen has 1,460. I do not know if the engines had any head upgrades or not. I am the 4th owner and by all accounts she is fresh water only on Lake Michigan. We also had a full survey done and have a few items to deal with.

Ray230 VHF Radio handset cords are in bad shape and it appears no replacements exist anymore
Generator is only putting out 114 volts at 59 hertz - hopefully just a good service is needed
The main salon AC/Heat is not working. The other three units (including cockpit) look to be fine. No water flow when just the main salon is turned on.
Engine blowers do not work
One of the dripless shafts has a small leak
Steering is need of hopefully just a fluid and bleed as very hard to turn
Possible exhaust leak
Some bow thruster motor brush dust

She is in winter storage in Muskegon, MI and we hope to have the items repaired in the spring before we bring her across the lake to Kenosha. For the generator I will likely use the Grand Haven based Cummins shop, but open to any other recommendations? Also, can anyone recommend a company for the other items?

Other aspect I am investigating is boarding. I generally like to bow in so we face the water, when in the cockpit but the stern design makes it difficult to board from the side so we may stern in. We also looked at steps to board from the side, but we also have a large dog that would need to navigate whatever we choose. If an extended swim platform was reasonable that also may be the solution. Anyone have any advice?
