OFFICIAL - 450DA Owner's Thread****

just replaced the bow thruster batteries with a pair of ODYSSEY AGM's and replaced the charger with a Pro Nautic with remote on order.

The charger has a grounding lug, as per recent ABYC standards.

This grounding lug is supposed to be tied into the bonding system.

So,

Instead of doing a HOME RUN to the engine room, can anyone please tell me if there is a nearby spot somewhere forward where I can tie into the bonding system?

I was thinking maybe one of the HVAC units?

MERRY CHRISTMAS !

Mine is a home run to my ER...

Not exactly 450 related, but I got an inflatable raft and hooked it onto the back while we're at anchor. As long as the wind is down, it proved quite effective as another spot to sit/swim from/fish from. Deflates and stores under the starboard aft seat.

Refrigerator(s) were replaced by PO with mains powered (110v/230v) 91L Midea units x 2, which I have found to be of no real use when out on the anchor for multiple days/nights as it requires constant generator starts to keep cold. I prefer to run the generator as few times as possible.

Do you all have 12v/24v/110v (230v in my region) fridge/freezer units (what brand)?
Do you have them running off separate batteries (presumably LiFePo4) or off your main lead-acid batteries?
Can you describe your install and make any recommendations (forget propane models - I don't want that onboard).

Thanks

Greg

Been working on this 450 project for one year now, concentrating mostly on survey matters, bringing machinery back to baseline and restoring reliability issues for a 27 year old vessel, with cosmetic matters coming in last.

Here's some interior GLAMOR SHOTS taken yesterday to share:

This item was found in the cabin floor locker, next to the vaccuflush.

Appears to be a shield of some sort

In a year of ownership, I've not seen any practical use for this.

Can anyone please identify it, or now that I'm at my one year anniversary, it can be tossed.

Photos below.

Love the float idea!

I have replaced the 4 engine/house Group 27 batteries with LiFePo4 batteries and it has been a great upgrade. For those in regions where you have to remove the batteries for the winter, lifting four smaller 20 pound batteries out of the engine room is a dream when compared to the four 70lb lead acids which were shoehorned into the batt box. I had to replace the charger with a Victron 50 amp, but it was relatively plug-and-play. It's now a "smart" battery system with an app and all sorts of notification options. Most importantly, my time without running the generator has doubled (I've also swapped most lights to LED, which helps) and the CCA increased from 800CCA per battery to 1050CCA per battery). Make sure to get a battery with is rated for use with the current from an alternator. When finished, it'll be about a 350lb weight reduction, double the storage and none of the cons of dealing with lead acid.

I'll be doing the generator soon and will likely change the bow thruster battery when the time comes.

Really, really impressive workmanship and many hours I bet.
The floors look amazing (I saw your other post on this - wow)!
What tapware did you use in the main galley?
I like the paper towel dispenser!
I see the replacement speakers in the galley and bedroom, presumably because the original cloth cover started to discolor (mine are turning gray with age).
Nice idea with the cutting board over the old mixer (don't happen to have the mixer jug do you?)
Leather straps around the sliding doors - great idea!
What is the hatch cover in the floor of the aft cabin...don't think I have this.
What is the brand of soap dispenser in the main bathroom/head (looks better than the aging soap dish I have)?

Thanks

Greg

What tapware did you use in the main galley?
I like the paper towel dispenser!

  • All the galley/head hardware came from a big box hardware store - Lowe's/Home Depot. Don't recall the brand/model

I see the replacement speakers in the galley and bedroom, presumably because the original cloth cover started to discolor (mine are turning gray with age).

  • Cloth was stained and speakers were tired. Replaced with JL speakers fed by a JL amp. Enclosed subwoofer is under the forward part of the salon sofa. Entire factory entertainment center was removed, creating tremendous storage advantages and replaced with a Fusion sound system below the TV and at the cockpit

Nice idea with the cutting board over the old mixer (don't happen to have the mixer jug do you?)

  • Cutting board is attached with velcro, covering the hole where the former rusty Nutone mixer motor was. I'll be lining the area below it so one will be able to simply lift the cutting board up to throw small trash items away quickly and easily. I do not have the mixer, but do have the can opener attachment still new in the box. Free if anyone wants it, just pay for the shipping.

Leather straps around the sliding doors - great idea!

  • Those snap in, allowing the doors to remain secure while underway

What is the hatch cover in the floor of the aft cabin...don't think I have this.

  • That is access to the top of the fresh water holding tank for the water level sending unit.

What is the brand of soap dispenser in the main bathroom/head (looks better than the aging soap dish I have)?

THANK YOU !

Home Depot vinyl plank flooring - went with the best quality for bathroom/kitchen

90% of it is floating, the hatches and a few errant areas are glued down with contact cement.

The bathroom floors are 100% removable - This is especially important for the aft bath floor as the flooring covers the floor shower drain.

vertical carpet sections are glued in and simply rolled over at the top. Home Depot in stock/on the roll carpet.

Stainless/red LED floor lights added to all steps, including the mid cabin step down.

Future list includes replacing the now yellowed factory incandescent rope lights with LED's and a big project with little return is to remove that long, starboard panel housing the faux aquarium glass and replacing that now badly yellowed rope light with an aqua colored LED strip light.

I'll ask the obvious questions first……….1. Why? Then 2….. diesel engines require a whole lot of clean fresh air, so, if you remove the hull vents, how are you going to supply the amount of air your engines require? The vents are not there by accident or because of their esthetic design. Sea Ray has (had !) a propulsion design and engineering staff to compute the air flow needs of the engine package planned for each model. Also, unlike some models and some other brands, the 450DA hull vents are designed in a way to prevent water from side spray or seas from entering the engine spaces……any water taken on the hull vents on the 450 is drained back overboard without getting to air intakes or spraying all over the mechanicals.

I owned a 450DA for 27 years and am still of the opinion that it is the best designed mid-cabin cruiser any manufacturer had yet to come up with. But, let us know this one works out……….

Anyone remove the side intake vents?
Removing temporarily to access something? Removing to repaint? or Removing for good and filling in the holes?

I removed mine last Winter and had them Powder Coated Gun Metal Grey.

We Need a little more info.

Would love to see how they look! Had thought about wrapping mine in a matte black viny….

The plan was to pull them and install led lights behind them. Then put them back.

Morgan,
How were you able to powder coat them? I thought they were fiberglass

Preventative maintenance question:
With Hurth transmissions, if one engine stops, should I tie off the shaft preventing it from spinning so that the transmission is not damaged by the prop free spinning?

thanks

Yes and just as importantly to keep from damaging the shaft seals as cooling water is off - unless you have cross-over cooling.
