Yes and just as importantly to keep from damaging the shaft seals as cooling water is off - unless you have cross-over cooling.

Ok - yes, I have cross over cooling for the shaft seal, which now seems pointless if the recommended practice is to tie off the shaft.

I guess a spinning shaft in the non-lubricated transmission is the issue.

Any best practice for the "tie off"? I like to be prepared!

Thanks

I would say how far? Easily, you could travel several miles without issues. Regardless, dogging it off at the coupler and using the coupler bolts to help prevent spinning with rope or a ratchet-strap.

Ran her up to Sarasota a couple of weeks ago. Despite being well inside the channel, got into some skinny water while on plane and slightly scarred the leading edges on both props.

These are in fact the factory props, and have been reduced .75 and then again another .75

Any further reduction will create tremendous inefficiencies, they have been taken down as far as they reasonably can be.

This 450 Sundancer is a bit on the heavy side with 180' all chain rode, stern thruster, bow thruster with 2 heavy OPTIMA batteries up front, tools, spares and then the surprise.........

9 boxes of Home Depot's best quality vinyl plank flooring.

Just weighed the box at 44.1 lbs for a total of 397 lbs !

When I got the props back the second (well actually the third time) I was able to reach WOT of 2780 and 2783 on my digital tachs, (verified with a phototach)

This was fully loaded - full fuel, full water and 1/3 waste

She's making 21.6 kts @2,400 RPM

So, I'm thinking get these cleaned up and keep as spares for a Bahamas trip or extended cruising (Great Loop IS a REAL possibility - attended Looperpalooza in Ft Myers recently, and this is most definitely a bucket list item)

Talked to my prop guy and they are recommending a 5 blade VEEM propeller (detail uploaded)

If this would in fact make the spec claimed, I'd likely be all over it, however I remain skeptical.

This is most certainly not a high speed performance boat, so I'm thinking Michigan Wheel, Acme or something comparable.

Very much interested in qualified comments, experiences and comments.

Looking to add boost and EGT gauges to my CATs. Anybody have a line on gauges that will match the existing 2" gauges on a circa 1997 450DA? Was going to go with turbocators, but black trimmed gauges with the existing silver/SS trimmed gauges will kick my OCD into overdrive...

Thank in advance...

Flax packing cord for the rudders…
Can anyone tell me what size to use for a ‘97 450?
PTFE infused or not?
How often should the packing be changed?
How do you keep the locking nut from salting up over time…I notice my locking nuts are actually backed off!?!
Can the old packing be removed without disconnecting the rudder control arms? There’s not a lot of room from the hull to the packing nut to try and get a pick under to get the old packing out…any tips?
Presumably the boat has to be on the hard to do the job?
Is best practice to have two strips of packing with their ends at 180 degrees from one another and each end cut at a 45 degree angle? Should marine grease be added or the packing tape is sufficiently pre-lubricated?

As always your wisdom and advice appreciated.

thanks Greg

Does anyone have some ACTUAL travel lift weight numbers to share for the 450 Sundancer?

I know the published number, but really do need some reality based numbers for my prop guy.

Does anyone know how to access the horn (is it an air horn or electric)? I can hear it click when engaged so it must be getting power. As best I can tell it says "AFI". Looks impossible to access from the round inspection plate on the bow

yes, i recently overhauled mine.

it’s an electric motor that is an air pump.
To remove it, access is both from the round inspection portal and the anchor hatch. Remove the air hose on the front side and the positive/negative battery leads on the rear. From memory there’s a couple of bolts/clamps holding it in place but it comes out fairly easily. You have to feel, rather than sight the bolts/nuts using each access port as best you can.

the motor gets salted up. I pulled mine apart and cleaned it but be careful doing this as it’s like a clock - spring loaded bushes that break easily.

Once I cleaned and tested, reinstallation wasn’t too hard and all works now.

The 450 is parked in the middle of this where the white dot is!! I’m hoping she will hold, with berth lines all around and doubled at key points!

Is anyone aware of the hull deadrise angle for transducer replacement? Thanks

Deadrise is 19* per the good folks at BOE - In the event someone else is looking in the future.

No comments in a month? Is everyone over on the new super-thread?

Super thread?

Actually the thing that surprises me is during the last half of 2021, I looked at numerous 450's, on line and in person, which now presumably, have new owners.

Of all those 1995-1998 450's only one has shown up here on CSR.

These are older boats with no factory support.

One would think there would be issues and questions.
