Glad to see this!

I’ll move my diesel spamming here from
now on. Current projects are all cooling hose and clamp replacement (AF and sea water side), aftercooler cleaning and pressure testing, and turbo compressor housing clean

Good idea to start this official thread as there is a lot of good info on this site for 3116/3126 engines.

I'm inching closer to an official offer on a boat with 3126 engines. I'll be sure to post my questions on here.

I added boost and egt gauges to our engines last year. I’ll update this post with part numbers when I have a chance to pull them. I love having this data on the dash.

Gauges are ISSpro Turbocators. Total cost is about $800

ISSPro.com parts:
2 x R609 (Turbocator gauges)
2 x R658HT-PL (EGT Thermocouple)
2 x R66025-PL (25' EGT wiring to helm)
2 x R681 (engine end compression fitting)
2 x R7110-25 (25' boost hose to helM)

CAT fitting:
2 x 8J7844 (installs into one of the plugs in manifold right before the grid heater)

Good stuff. Temp and PSI are so very important to any diesel engine. Add in clean fuel, clean fuel&air filters and thats about all you need! And the all important WOT +1-3% fully loaded, etc.

Anyone know the O-ring part number for the compressor housing backplate? SIS doesn’t show the exploded view of the turbo.

mine are in fine shape but while I have it apart I’d like to go with a new one.

side note - CAT hoses have been reasonable so far. I just priced the wastegate hose, $52 each. That ones a little steep

Turbocater - now that is just a great name for something!!

Carter,

I notice that your Cat engines were 350 hp 3126's. For you 300/350hp 3116's and 385/420 hp 3126's owners, the following list of parts may or may not fit your engines. Before shopping on line or going to your Caterpillar store for what you need, take your engine serial numbers and AR numbers with you and have the parts guy look up the parts you need by those 2 numbers. Might save you time and extra trips to the Cat store or return shipping.

for any new owners who don’t already know: create an account at parts.cat.com and then enter your SN’s and AR into the system and save them. You can also click SIS at the top of the site and all the parts diagrams are available. It’s not the most intuitive system ever, but the info is all there if you take the time to look through it

I'm still trying to track down the compressor o-ring part number. CAT doesn't seem to know it, and it's not listed anywhere. I'm guessing if I can cross-reference the turbo back to the OEM (Garrett maybe?) I can figure it out.

My originals are fine and cleaned up OK, but I'd still rather replace them. They measure 1.5mm x 159mm and appear to be silicone.

You are on the right track. One of the confounding factors about Caterpillar is that they guard, or perhaps they don't know the part numbers, of vendor supplied components, like they are the combination to the nuclear launch codes in the presidents football.

I found an aftermarket company selling remanned Cat turbos and their description shower the application to be your engines, 3126e'a and the base part was a BorgWarner turbocharger. Hope that points you in the right direction......

Getting closer! Looks like its a BW S300CG. This site has a complete rebuild kit, most parts I don't need, but it appears to have the compressor plate seal that I need and 8 new bolts with thread sealant for the clamp plates which aren't a bad idea to replace anyway. For only $60 each I might go this route..

You're the man Frank. Thanks again

Is it in the cartridge or external? Sometimes you have to dig a few levels down into the online parts manuals to find what your looking for.

external. I'm still looking for the BW parts manual, I also sent a note to one of the amazon retailers who sells the rebuild kits to see if they'll sell o-rings separate

Received the estimate for the survey of the 2 3126 engines. Including travel time it's going to be between $3000-$4000. Thats more than I was thinking. Oh well....
