Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

went with new injectors. Given CAT's hourly rate, which includes travel to/from the boat, decided to get new so they would be covered under warranty...
I was under the impression that new injectors are not available and all Cat supplied injectors are remans with full warrantee. A friend of mine with a Cabo and Cat C18's changed injectors twice over the last several months and all were Cat remans because new are not available; he wanted new...
If you purchased "new" but they wanted the cores back, then I suspect the "new" were actually Cat remans. Could be wrong however; seems a trend lately.....

part number should tell the story, right? Our remans were 10R-8996 and the new PN are 173-4647

our reman box also had a sticker on the side with the reman logo

disclaimer for future readers: don’t assume that’s the PN for all 3126 injectors, the correct one will be on the valve cover. The injectors vary by year and HP rating

I'm no expert, but I was told they were new. And I kept the cores. He said to hold on to them and get them rebuilt by a third party (much cheaper than if CAT did it) becuase new ones are few and far between...

if you kept the cores, they’re new, I got something like $1200 back for our core returns on the remans

Engine alarms on my 1996 450 DA are not working, and have never worked properly since taking ownership 18 months ago.

One comes on briefly when preheat is engaged, the other is completely dead.

This is a highly unmolested boat, with zero cobbling by any PO's.

Was a dock queen with 435 hours at the time of survey.

My plan is to study the wiring schematic first, then see what can be tracked down when I pull out the dash rocker switch panel.

Any input is appreciated.

BEST !

I think you will find the only thing that monitors the engines you have other than you and gauges is the Systems Monitor.
There are several threads that go into that system where you can find about any answer to the questions.

Pulled samples as well to send to Blackstone.

I noticed there are two drain plugs on the oil pan. The reverso hose connects to the one further forward. This plug looks to be a little bit higher than the plug behind it. Is there a specific reason for this? I would think it would be better to use the plug closest to the stern, which is lower in the oil pan and would pick up more oil.
I read said 22 quarts, 5 gallons, 6 gallon 7 gallons to fill the engines back up. I had 15 gallons with me, I put 6 gallons in each engine, warmed them up, checked for leaks, then went home. How much do these engines take when replacing the oil filter?

Samples came back, all is well, oil tested well physically on both engines.

Has anyone else wondered about which drain plug the Reverso is connected to?

Add a bottle of Clear Diesel and run out tanks, refill/ add the cocktail. Call it a day.

From my Westerbeke Generator thread, I confirmed today with Blackstone Labs they do offer bacteria testing on diesel fuel.

Regarding oil testing, CAT's disclaimer is "CONTINUE SAMPLING AT THE NORMAL INTERVAL. MORE SAMPLE HISTORY NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A NORMAL WEAR TREND" (I copied that off my latest report, it's in capitals. I didn't do that!)

If you don't have documented sampling records, my suggestion is to start now and continue.

Finally getting to the dash/instrument MAKEOVER . . . including the addition of boost, pyrometer and trans temp gauges.

<photos below>

In this case, all are electric VDO Viewline series.

Please confirm the EGT probe goes into the top of the turbo exhast side- simply remove that plug.

Been searching for the exact location for the boost sensor installation on the intake side.

Read some posts about difficulties in removing the hex plugs.

Any suggestions on this?

A preemptive strike using propane or MAP gas?

Anyone have a photo of where to connect?

RESPONSES AND GOOD INFO IS APPRECIATED !

yes on the egt, goes right in that hole where the plug is

I used the middle plug for boost but either is fine. You can see the black line in the photo below (my gauge is a mechanical). Idk if I’d use heat, there is a rubber oring in there since it’s a straight thread. Use a chisel or wedge and a swift wack of a hammer to start the turn if it gives you fits

you can also see the pyro in this photo

My new maretron setup (2 DSM410s). I’m may still rearrange everything next year.
My plugs were brass, easily removed and not sealed with an o ring. While I was at it I installed engine room temperature probe and probes on the exhaust elbows.

THANK YOU !

Seems fairly straightforward..... except there's not a great deal of clearance above the engine to be swinging a hammer.......

interesting that you say that about the floor. Do those panels come out in a 450? A friend of mine is a mechanic and has to do the overhead on a pair of 3116s in a 450 and he said there is almost no overhead clearance between the valve cover and the floor above

CAT did my overhead just fine with the clearance on my '98 450DA, now the '98 450SD that I was on last month has a lot less than mine...
