Oil Change? What have things come too!

Funny story ....

I used to have an Italian exotic. First time I went to do the oil, I grabbed the 7-qt drain pan I've been using for years. I get all set up, and right as I'm taking out the drain plug, I decide it's a good idea to stop and see how much it takes. 12 quarts! Whoops, that would've gone all over the garage

I just paid $30 for 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 full synthetic (5W-30 and 0W-20)

That's insane
Same exact 2 I need for the SUV and GFs car, about the same price. I have to buy 2 extra quarts for the SUV since it takes 6.4 quarts. Don't even get me started on ".4" quarts...

SUV is pretty simple except for how they mount the stupid paper oil filter and the $25 wrench I had to buy to do it. My prior Volvo was like that as well. GFs oil filter is buried behind a bunch of plastic crap I have to remove to get to it. Again, not my favorite job but I know it was done right.

And now I have 18+ quarts of used oil I have to carry to Auto Zone - not fun either.

I figured you for a guy to do your own. ... And, once again, I forget to remove the drain plug in the drain pan (Big red circle cap in pic below) and you guessed it, oil all over the garage floor. The white oil absorbent pads from the boat came in handy, again. ...

I usually do. I always change the oil in the boat. I wanted to relax this weekend and not work on something in the cold. My garage is heated but I need to leave the door open when changing the oil. And didn't feel like having the oil run down my arm when I pull the plug ... last time I do that, back to changing it myself.

When I do it myself I have four vehicles to do. If I take it to the shop I only have one to do myself. I made my wife get an oil change last week from the dealer, so I had to take mine in. I still do the Vet myself no matter what.

For me it comes down to time. I did my Escalade in 20 mins between meetings yesterday. $40 for oil/filter/plug but by the time I drive to a dealer, sit there, then drive home I've lost $500 in income

One nice thing about an SUV: if you're not a big bastard you can get in/out on a creeper without even needing a jack

Yep I need the jack ...

I can feel your pain on that. I used to have them Express Mobile one shop to it and when it went up to $120 I just started doing it myself on my 2018 Chevy Silverado The boat I do myself and my truck I do myself because you can buy it at AutoZone or advance Auto for under 40 bucks with a filter so I feel you I would have absolutely not paid for that I would have said there's a major problem here just challenge it on your credit card that's all

Nothing to challenge, I paid for it in person. I said something like "Dam" and he said - yeah Mobil one what did you expect. And I said - not that. ...

I would have thought he would have given you some kind of an estimate before you walked out the door like you know yeah it's a hundred a vehicle or 110 not 200 that's insane and they buy it in bulk for about $2 a quart it sucks I feel your pain

Be glad you that you didn't need to have your truck filled with eggs you probably would have fell over, lol

My wife pays $27 for her Kia, from the dealer. Tires get rotated and a good wash comes with it. Having them do the oil saved us real big as she had some recall stuff that they did. Her engine sucked a piston and they replaced the engine under the recall notice they did.

As for the two boats, tractor, lawn equipment and my pick up, they all get the same oil, so I do them all myself. The only one that is a true pain in the butt is the hydraulic system on the tractor. But I'm not paying the shop the $500 for the labor on the tractor.

Here's a good laugh - the labor was $17.50 ...

I also do the tractor/snow blower/generator etc. myself as well. Knew the cost of Mobil 1 at NAPA where they get their stock from. And that is why I was taken back. It's not the 350 that got me, and that money will not affect my life in any way, it was that 350 for two oil changes that blows my mind. As @Blueone said, he paid $450 at the dealer for his wife's car. That had to blow his mind for an oil change.

I would much rather pay that for dinner and drinks, a lot more fun that way.

Nah...Ram with the air suspension. Two clicks of the button to get to 'Off Road 2' and I've got two extra inches to work with!

I use Rottella in all my vehicles, boat as well. I buy the oil and the guy comes to the house and does all four. I do the boat, I just like doing that one on my own. 6 filters, 25qts $75 for each plus the oil

No that did not blow my mind…it just pissed me off….. What did ..no word of a lie. My wife calls me right before Christmas and said the brakes are making a grinding noise and the warning on the dash says it is pad wear. I’m working up in Michigan and don’t have time for this shit ….. I usually do brakes myself…. But not during Christmas ….. so I call the dealer and said I need you to replace 4 rotors and pads can you give me an estimate…. He said approx $4,000…. I said did you hear me?…. He said yes and we are running 6 weeks behind…. Holy Phuck. Now that blew my mind.
I purchased Brembo pads and rotors and a new emerg brake actuator for a total of $480 and replaced everything over Christmas.
A week ago I traded it for a Lexus ….. no more Mercedes bullshit

I change the oil myself on all things with a motor. Need the savings for fuel :)

Not a big Ford fan but I did buy my neighbors Expedition with a snow plow on it. It has the stupidest place for the oil filter. Left front wheel well. I only drive it couple hundred miles a year. Therefore, I don’t change the oil every year.

One year in the middle of plowing and I see fluid on the ground. I was panicking, thinking engine, transmission or snow plow hydraulic fluid. Turns out the effing oil filter rusted out.

Same with the girlfriend's car, it's buried up in the wheel well behind all this plastic crap. I have to pop five or six caps to get to it and then pull the crap back. All while laying under the car with the oil pan pressing against my chest, both arms stretched up into the wheel well area trying to do it. I left the caps off this time so it would be easier next year. I'm waiting to hear "what's that banging noise in front of my car" now.

The good news is her dad just built a monster two car garage with a car lift. The bad news is they live about an hour away.

I am like you. I try and work on my own cars whenever possible. My best friend is a mechanic and whenever I have a problem I call him and ask if I can do it or not. I replaced an engine mount on my car. It was one of the easiest things I’ve had to do. I was surprised, 15 minutes.

A few days ago my daughter said she had a nail in her tire. Of course I have my own patch kit and did it myself.
