Radar not working. Power question?

Yes, the update on the card is for the entire system, not one by one. You can't actually do it that way. All of the networked devices will power up when things are turned on and which ever MFD has the update card in it will start to update the entire system and then itself last.

But you need to use Garmin Express to get the updates and write them to the card.

I have never had any luck using active captain. It seems to go round and round stating check for updates, then your not connected to the inet no updates found. The seems to be the perpetual loop it stays in for me. Using the card is a much more stable experience.
Okay. I'll download all the updated to the card then.

I would get both units up to date on the firmware. The 942 is currently at 24.10 and the 76xx is 20.40. Not to mention the Radar has updates as well, 4.40.

The updates will most likely fix this.

Okay so I'm looking to update the software on a SD card on my computer. I use to be able to just go th Garmin website and download. What is this Garmin express? Just downloaded it and logged in. Now says 1 hr 30 min for the download? huh.

When Garmin updates it cycles through all of the connected equipment one at a time automatically.
The update software has all Garmin marine equipment on the update as applicable.
I use my smartphone with the Garmin App and do the system updates via WiFi. First download the update then connect and execute the update. Make sure you plug your phone into power as sometimes it can take a while.
One thing of importance is to have all the Garmin equipment turned on and absolutely not turn any power off until the update is fully executed.
I have Garmin MFD's, VHF, AIS, Remote, Card Reader, Router, GPS, and Fantom Radar - the update cycles through each and all of these.
I also use Active Captain on my iPhone for updates.

Out of curiosity to see if an update is needed I went into the Garmin Active Captain App on my Smartphone - Behold, I need to do an update. Most of my equipment is listed in the update -
Course Computer Unit - I have V3.50 and V3.70 is available
GHP Reactor 40 - I have V5.50 and V5.70 is available
GPS 19x - I have V2.90 which is current
GPSMAP 8616 - I have V29.20 and V31.20 is available
GPSMAP 8616xsv - I have V29.20 and V31.20 is available
Fusion Apollo MS-RA770 - nothing shown
Garmin Card Reader - I have V4.30 which is current
GRID 20 - I have V2.20 which is current
GBT 10 - I have V2.10 which is current
AIS 800 - not on list
VHF 315 - not on list
Garmin Fantom 54 - not on list

I may need to add the products that are not on the update list....

It will also take longer than you think to update your Garmin devices and as Tom said make sure not to power down any of them during the updates. Garmin gives you a warning saying something along the lines of powering down during the update could render the unit inoperable. Leave yourself enough time and you should be fine!

I did a full update a few weeks ago, including my VHF 315 which does not show up on my device list. I spoke to a Garmin Tech who told you can’t add the VHF but couldn’t tell me why.

Tom, Fusion is done through the Fusion app.

That works for fine with Android as well.

Can't answer you on this, but it does take some time. The link in one of my other post's had the direct download, but if the card is not formatted right it won't update. That is why I suggested Express, but you do need to have the devices registered. ...

Garmin releases updates at the beginning of every quarter. Just as an FYI ...

I don’t know if Garmin is like Raymarine, but in certain circumstances, I have to upgrade components in a certain order. I bricked part of my Autopilot by not paying attention to this, so be careful when doing multiple upgrades.

Garmin does an auto update and cycles through the device list. It knows which must be done first and proceeds in that order. It's pretty much idiot proof when done with an SD card.

Yea It's done. When I installed the app it found my 3 devices. Downloaded, well see what happens.

Their tech support is, well, less then helpful at times. Sad to say.

Well Radars not working again. Question.. I have power on the power line at the unit. Is the power light on the radar supposed to be on when the unit is not in use or will that light up once the radar is activated on the chartplotter? Just wondering if the CAT cable activated the power or once power it put to the unit with the power wire the light should go on.

I have never looked at that, but I believe when everything is first turned on and it is initializing, the radar starts spinning, the led is on at that point. The the unit goes to standby. At that point on radar screen you should be able to press the transmit button on the screen.

What got the using working last time. New firmware or cleaning the cable? My guess is the cable is not making full contact or is intermittent. Tough to explain how to clean the connector, but that would be my next step or replace the cable. To fix the cable, if you have some slack, just cut the end off and replace it.

Garmin Marine Radars have an LED light on the unit, near the power and Marine Ethernet ports. The light color indicates the status of the radar and can be helpful when troubleshooting an issue.
  • LED is not lit - No Power applied to the radar
  • Solid Red - Radar is powering up when ready for use LED will change to a flashing green
  • Red blinking - Radar has an error. See related content below
  • Green blinking - Radar is working normally
  • Orange blinking - Software is being updated
If the radar has a red blinking LED, there are three troubleshooting steps:
  1. Test and or replace the Marine Network Cable
  2. Verify the power cable and power supply
  3. Update software

Well I found the problem! I tried everything then decided to take it down and pull the cover. The cat5 connection on the IF board. This was causing it to go on and off.

... I can't even fix this myself...UGG

Unless you you do, your looking at a new radar unit or finding a used one. That connector can be replaced pretty easily.
