Radar not working. Power question?

In for a penny in for a dollar...

Take the boards out, both of them, take pics for were all the connectors go.
Look the boards over carefully for more corrosion. Spray with good electrical cleaner.

What you see is electrolysis, there is small amounts of current in those pins and with the moisture, same problem as out drives galvanic action. How much moisture? just damp or actual standing water? Was the 12 volt power feed wet also?
If the boards look good, worth a shot at replacing the connector.

Last I checked, several years back, Garmin wanted $600 to refurbish/repair plus you pay shipping. Call service desk see what they say today. They wouldn't even take mine to old. So I watched eBay and picked up some non-working for $100 each. Cannibalized for working boards. Even ended up selling one shell and one 18HD I fixed. Broke even and ended up with my 24"HD running an 18HD motherboard. But it took time.

You do need the EXACT replacement RJ45. As I mentioned earlier Garmin only used 4 pins for data and 4 for propriety signals. The data pins have transformers. The others are linked 2 x 2. plus the LEDs (which you could live without.

the x and u in the part number are the LED colors (Green & Yellow)

I pulled the board. Here it is. It looks dry and clean. I found this site for the connector using the part number on the existing one. https://xfmrs.com/products/xfvoip5e-ctxu1-4m/
I'm good with soldering , but never replaced a circuit like this.

Yeah, not easy, you do not want much heat or the nearby SMC (surface mount components) will come off.
Very low watt pin-point iron 5 watt, or temp controlled solder station.

Don't try to take the old one off all at once. Cut the tin can off first with a Dremel. Cut away the old parts bit by bit until all you have left is the stubs of the various pins. Then remove one pin at a time. A de-soldering wick or solder vacuum until you have all empty holes.

The new one is the easy part.

It's a multi-layer board, just be careful not to get it too hot. Use a soldier sucker to remove the soldier, not wick.

Thanks, Did my research. Bought a solder sucker heat gun combo, resin, and also wick. I'll take it real slow. It seems that this company in Indiana is the only one I can find that has the pin configuration I need. I hope they will sell only one part or at least steer me where to go. I'll give them a call in the morning.

Called for the part and it’s proprietary to Garmin. He is seeing if he can get me just one piece. Even that he said will be around $300. Garmin wants $910…to send it in!! So pissed. These are $10parts online. If anyone knows what’s compatible with the pin configuration please let me know.

Curious why not? But in any event Mouser is going to be your friend: https://www.mouser.com/c/?q=RJ45 jack with leds You just have to look at all of the data sheets. ...

They only sell to Garmin. I asked if there was ANYTHING they can do and he told me he would check for overstock and get back to me in a couple days. I said that would be great, because I didn't want to pay Garmin so much. He told me if he can get it it would be around $300. WTF is going on these days!

I went on Mouser. It will take me weeks to go through all the sheets to get a match.

Gota pay to play, it sucks and Garmin is out of their mind lately. Can't get parts from anyone. And it's not only Garmin it an issue with a lot of others as well.

Your only supposed to get a few years out of anything and now it's time to re-buy new. I mean how else are they going to stay in business, right? SMH and walking away ...

EDIT: Might be time for an upgrade. I am thinking of doing that anyway. Has been on my list for a while now.

I think I'm going to send it to these people. My option is $250 and they will replace the RJ45 with the oem, NO warranty back in 10 days or so. Or replace it and test it for $600 with the chance something else could be bad and cost more, with a lead time of 90 days. I'm gonna take a chance at the $250. It's either that or New for around $1700. Since one of the pins fell out in my hand, I'm pretty sure it was bad.

Sea-Tronics has always been a good place. They will treat you right.

Sent the board out to be repaired. I wanted it Done correctly. Everything works perfect now. In the meantime I bought a new Fantom and will be selling this one. I want to re-coup a little. All new power, Ethernet and hardware that came with the Fantom will be sold with this. I just wanted to reinsure whoever reads this if I post on the for sale forums that the only thing repaired was a new Ethernet connection. Nothing else was wrong with it and would never sell something I would put on my boat.
