I have a 340 DA and I want to add a satelite TV system. I was looking at the KHV M3 system for open water use. Someone told me not to bother with getting the HD version bevcause you have to change satelitle between SD and HD channels and there is a delay. Anybody have agood rec for a good open water system?

Thanks,

john

I would not get a KVH right now. The only player in the market that can do DirecTV's HD lineup is Intellian.. The release a product this summer that uses one antenna and can do both Ka and Ku band:

Anyone want to buy a used KVH TracVision 4? KVH only supports Ku band... DirecTV is moving everything to Ka band.

Thanks for that, my other tvs already on teh boat are not HD so I was just thinking about going SD with the sat. good idea or no? and if I'm not doing HD do you still recomend intellian over khv?

Well... it's only a decision you can make. I personally like HD on the boat (I have an HD distribution system). Once you go to HD, it's hard to look at SD. I'm surprised you don't have HD sets on your boat being a 2006...

This is where the argument from the "list" will start about how TV's on boats are a waste of money and you should enjoy sitting on the back in silence with a glass of wine watching the sun set with your wife... yeah.. whatever...

The M3 is a lot cheaper and some people here have had good luck with them for simple SD reception.

I will say I'm not real thrilled with KVH's "sleep" mode. It's really bad... I had to turn mine off and I don't think you can turn it off on the M3...

I do not have experience with the Intellian stuff but it can't be much worse.

My bought my '01 340 with a KVH sat TV, and I don't us it... I may some day in the future, but I would rather have radar... We are not big TV watchers... One good thing about having R2D2 on the arch, is our friends can pick us out at a distance...:wow:

I am in the process of adding a sat TV and this is what I have gathered to date. The Intellian i2 is a smaller Ku band Sat TV antenna that can work with DirectTV or DISH for SD. You can get the HD channels from DISH if you get the optional sat switch (DISH switches between multiple Ku band sat). DirectTV has most of the HD channels on Ka band which requires the Intellian d4 or d6, these can also receive Ku band. So if money is not an issue the Intellian d4 would give you both SD and HD from either DirectTV or DISH (d4 and d6 have the sat switch standard), the i2 will get DirectTV SD and DISH HD if you get the optional sat switch. These Intellian systems do not come with a receiver but will support more than 1 receiver for multiple needs.

If you stay with KVH, the M-2 works great underway ( which it is not supposed to ) I can on the ICW at 20 plus mph, and it still works. The M-2 is a lot less money. $2200-2300

The new M1 is small and also light weight. It's a roaming dish like the M3 only smaller and lighter. Plus the cost is $2300 vs $3400. No HD though. I really don't care about HD on the boat. Got mine from Jim @ BOE best upgrade yet.

I just installed a KVH M3 and the rf doesn't work ...have to be 2-3 feet with remote before it engages. Installer is ordering new rf units but the odd thing is I had 2 receivers installed and same problem with boat. Any of you had this problem before?

I haven't had any problems with my M3 RF remote, or any other aspect of it.
OP, do a search, there's plenty on this. One of the differences between the KVH and the Intellian is the KVH includes an integrated control box/DirecTV receiver that is 12V. The Intellian includes a control box, but no receiver- so you have to purchase either a 115v or 12vdc receiver.

thanks for the info, huge help. I decided to go american and the KVH M3 system since i'm only going SD and really only care about watching football on Sundays. I'll let you know how it comes out.
