Surface Prep for Vitricore replacement

John @PlayDate - These are the corners with the detail. The last pic shows a bit of fogginess I'd like to correct. I can match the finish using aniline dyes and satin polyurethane but corner piece would need to be removed and replaced with a suitable wood. The boat stays airconditioned at all times. Ideas?

Tom,

Are those corners removable? I'm curious what the inside of the cabinets look like in the corners. I'm pretty sure the corner moldings are real wood and not veneered. When Ultrawood was in business (US wholesaler of Lignapal) I know they did not carry moldings.

I'm willing to bet the entire cabinet structure was constructed in mdf and the Lignapal laminate and corner molding were added to it.

In any event your plan to refresh them should work. It is relatively easy to recreate that corner piece molding if you need to.

Just noticed that covering!

Looks great!!!

Tom,

Let me take a closer look at this tonight. I recall them using real wood corners to manage the cabinet edges. Lignapal could not bend to that radius so color matched end pieces were an easy solution.

I expect the cabinet was assembled with the end pieces finished …..the question is how are they attached?
Those corner pieces seem to be integrated/attached to the side panel which is separate from the cabinet box structure. I did verify the cabinets are 100% plywood - no MDF or chip-board. I can't seem to determine how those side panels or corners are attached... Some pics -

When your cutting laminate, cut it ~1/2" larger then it needs to be then glue it in place. Then trim it with a router with a laminate bit. Perhaps your going to do it that way?

Tom,

I haven’t taken one of those cabinets apart so it would be a guess on my part. But if you consider the vintage and how cabinets were made in production….those corner pieces had to be glued and clamped in place after they had been finished.

It would be a tough job to refinish them in place.

Exactly...just making sure it's right! No do overs on this!

John @PlayDate and I have been going back and forth on the plan, how to cut, route it etc. I drew it out, but triple checking my plan.

Thanks for posting all this information.
@dtfeld the layout for the parts is a good idea that I'm going to copy.
At the pricing for this stuff, wastage needs to be kept to a minimum.
