My daughter (28) has a Bachelors degree in Communications. Her initial plan was to go to law school but she got into insurance sales and was making more than most attorneys around here. Anyway, just a little background to show her level of motivation. She went to a local college that has a reputation for producing very successful students. My daughter graduated from the honors program in only 3 years. First person in the schools 100+ year history to do that. She made six figures her first year out. She now owns a couple of rental properties that she almost lost in Covid when tenants were not required to pay rent, yet she still had to pay her mortgages (thanks Joe). Luckily she made it through that as most of her tenants continued to pay but racked up quite a bit of credit card debt trying to subsidize everything. So she lost her current job about a month ago due to downsizing. She said she has applied for over 500 jobs and not one has panned out. On top of that, unemployment is giving her a hard time because she owns rentals (she owns the LLC). She netted $25,000 last year on the rentals but her income from the job she lost was $130,000. Unemployment is saying she has another income so may not be eligible. She is still fighting that.
So uncle Joe can give money away to those that have no desire to work but won't help those that want to work and have paid into the system for years. I realize unemployment is a state thing (PA) but you get my point. Gov Wolfe is just as bad and Fetterman is even worse.
Oh..and she applied for COBRA but they are backed up and have not got back to her. Today she had to go to an emergency dental visit and they gave her a hard time about COBRA. Both unemployment nor COBRA are returning her calls.
And these policies are why this country is falling apart.
Oh...and she had a 2016 Jeep Wrangler she bought new after graduating from college and just sold it to free up funds to help her get by. She has savings too she is going through that too. She has another 2016 car to drive.

Rant over!

Sorry to hear that. Good luck to her.

But how do you apply for 500 jobs in a month. Yeah, I know as an employer the employee finding situation sucks. These apps and web site make things too easy just click, click, click away. Half the people don't even know what job they are applying for.

And being a small landlord in this country is a way to financial ruin. The governments think you're a fat cat. My office clerk has a townhouse she rents out. Current tentant won't pay and won't move out. Court has refused to evict her. It's crazy.

I am very sorry for your daughter's situation! "They" know exactly what they are doing and sadly, I believe they enjoy the damage/suffering they have inflicted.

I was just telling my wife that I'd love to be a fly on the wall as Joe and Fetterman try to hold a conversation. I'd laugh if it weren't so concerning to our future.

Here in NW PA our diesel is $3 more per gallon than gasoline...and all because ol' joe sold our reserves to the enemy???

I find it interesting that the center of the bible (Psalm 118:8) says, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”

I came across this and thought you may want to take a look https://enemieswithinthechurch.com/#/4-steps-to-save-america

Yeah I'm in western PA (Beaver county) and Fetterman is a joke. He wants to legalize heroin, etc.
And yep, gas here is 3.99 and diesel is 6.59.

She started applying back in July as the job she took was a 90 day contract with no guarantee to be extended. It wasn't ideal but she had lost her previous job when her dept closed down. The company she just left asked her to come back in about a year when they feel they are in a better position but she obviously can't wait.
As far as the landlord thing...I think she is doing it right. She has a friend/mentor that is helping her and he has made very good money in this business. Early on it's tough but after she gets going should be very good. She has 2 single unit houses, a 4 unit and recently bought a 6 unit. So while she has nice revenue coming in, she has alot going out too

I can't recall the details as I threw all the paperwork away recently. When I left my last job I had up to 2 months to write the first check for cobra and then I think a year to write the second one. My plan during those two months was if I needed medical benefits, which I never did, I would write the check and mail it in.

I've been laid off four times in my career due to reduction in workforce, so I can empathize. Fortunately for me in all four cases I got a nice severance package and found work before I needed to use any of those funds. And in all cases I came out better than I was before. Hoping for the same for her.

Big government democrats always seem to forget about that going out part. :)

I'm still a bit shocked when I hear about folks "looking for work" but nothing has panned out. Though the market is certainly cooling, it still seems impossible to me that someone that actually needs/wants work can't find a decent job. So many companies are still desperately looking for talent, and not just McDonalds. But not everybody is paying a BS in Communications $130k...

She is willing to take substantially less. I think most she has been applying for were in the 90k range. With her accomplishments and resume that shouldn't be a stretch. But yeah, there are $20/hour jobs everywhere but not much out there in the upper ranges based on what she is seeing.

With coming recession caused by the debt bubble there is more heartache ahead. The big government republicans are just as much to blame. With the economy tanking, the border crisis, energy shortages, brink of war etc they give us a marriage act. Which by the way allows the federal government to prosecute any church or person that disagrees. While the left addresses its base the Republicans empower bitch mitch with a 7 percent approval rating behind close doors to hide their vote. They then wonder why they can't get the vote out.
A pox on both their houses!

See my other posts in the holding tank. Done with that turd. :)

As an employer, here is what I see. These internet services, indeed, zip recruiter, etc., suck. It is very easy to apply, and my understanding is the bigger companies use algorithms to screen applicants. So you need to figure out a way around those. If she is disclosing her salary, a lot of employers will scratch her if their jobs don't pay as much.

People who go around the indeed always get an interview from me. The ones that drop off their resume, fill out an app, make a phone call, or even an email. While some people say it shows they can't follow the rules, to me it shows initiative and a willingness to work. There is absolutely nothing worse than setting up an interview with someone, and their question is "what job is this now?"

I have been on both sides of this: 1) looking for my next job, may have to take less pay, applying for jobs, interviews, etc. and 2) now I am hiring for roles on my team. My company uses Indeed. I get a lot of unqualified candidates, so I asked HR to add screening questions, which they have done. I still get a lot of candidates who on paper are not a fit.

A well written, well formatted resume gets my attention. 2-3 pages tops. Succinct, to the point. She needs to make her resume stand out. Modify it for the role. I am sure she knows this, network, network, network. Go to local user group meetings, get on online forums, contribute, get some names of people she can contact directly, etc.

She said she paid to have her resume professionally done but pretty sure she customizes it too. She is much smarter than me (which isn't much of an accomplishment...lol)

I paid someone to help me with my resume years ago as well, money well spent.

One of my employers that laid me offered "Career Coaching". I laughed at it, but decided to try tit. It helped me, a lot. It was with a 3rd party. She's the same one that did my resume for me.

You'd be surprised how bad some resumes look that I review.

For example, I just reviewed this one:

  1. How do you approach problem solving in general?
    YES
  2. How big was the biggest project you worked on?
LET DISCUSS THIS IN INTERVIEW :)
  3. What do you look for in a development position?
LET DISCUSS THIS IN INTERVIEW :)
  4. What do you look for in a team culture/atmosphere?
LET DISCUSS THIS IN INTERVIEW :)
and another one:

  1. How big was the biggest project you worked on? Big

I have been using a headhunter company to find us applicants and they are really good at what they do. Surprisingly good. I would suggest that she at least give one a shot and see if they can help her find something.

I have a friend who works for a company that uses AI algorithms in an initial video "interview". She has a friend qualified for a position but the AI looks at the eye contact and visuals and she can't get past the AI so she cannot move to a face to face interview. Her boss had a great candidate also qualified for a position that couldn't meet the AI standards. He tried to pull strings but HR wouldn't budge... That stuff sucks.
