Hello all,

I have a 1 foot section of 5 inch wide vinyl bootstripe that was damaged with the by the previous owner (dealer). Its about in the middle of the boat, so I don't want to have to replace 37 feet of it.
Any advice on this repair? Should I overlap the new section over the original for adhesion once I remove the bad section?

Thanks for any advice!

If it were mine, I'd overlap the rear and leave it. The front, I'd also overlap but then with a straight edge and new razor blade cut through both new and old. Peel away the small section of old under the overlap then re-lay the new. That should give you a tight flush fit. Hope for the best once water starts hitting it.

That's how I did that on my old Chapparal 2550 and it lasted for the last 9 years I owned the boat.

This thread is so relevant. My boot stripe is damaged. Everyone says cant repair, have to remove it all and replace. This has been on 31 years. It ain’t coming off. I want to replace with black. Why can’t I just scuff it and put new on top?

Now that one isn't going to last long. Use a heat gun and remove the old one then put on new ...

3M makes a stripe off wheel....that does quick work if you are doing a big area

Heat Gun - Plastic Scrapper - Patience. Did ours last spring. Be sure to clean area WELL with alcohol just before applying new stripes. The slightest little bit of glue left will show under the new stripes.

Tony, depending on the quality of the striping it may shrink a bit, more or less. I generally use the trick that Tim mentioned, but I would probably leave both ends overlapped - just in case. From a few feet away you won't see the overlap. But if it shrinks, you will definitely see the white gap. By overlapping, even if it shrinks, you're good.

Pirate... it will definitely come off. It always does. As noted... heat gun and/or eraser tool. But sure, it's your boat - you can slap some black duct tape right over the old stuff if you want!

I patched my boot stripe several times by getting a few feet of gold and black striping from the marina after they repaired a damaged boat. They usually do insurance repairs because they are the recommended repair facility that Sea Ray uses. They usually just srick left over stripe tape on a shelf because they always order new striping for an insurance job.

The left overs I got were for a 1996 Sundancer and was a perfect match. I cut a patch with a razor knife and placed it over small damaged areas. You could see the repair from about 2 ft away but further than that you could not tell there was ever a nick in the original boot stripe.

Oops…….I just noticed you have a Carver. I have no idea if your Carver dealer can match your OEM striping or not, but good luck with it.
