Greetings all (and prayers out to all anywhere near storm track of Hurricane-then-tropical-storm Florence over last 72 hours - hope you and all your families are safe and sound)!

I was sure to read the mod’s “Please read before you post a question here” sticky before posting the below questions; however; it did just occur to me I forgot to do a search for this first (apologies, it has been a long day!) but, here goes:

2018 SPX 190 Mercury 4-stroke 150 hp outboard:

Inspecting our boat for damage from the storm that came through here yesterday (none, big breath, whew) the Admiral and I came across a pair of WHAT I AT FIRST THOUGHT WERE grease fittings, one on each opposing end or side of the Sea Star outboard steering cylinder ahead of our motor

TURNS OUT THESE ARE THE “RETURN LINES” (or bleed fittings) and not grease fittings at all!

I came across this video which educated me (right about the 3:30 minute mark):

If I could delete this post I would (red face and all) but instead, I’ll leave it up as a testament of what a great resource these CSR forums are, for us new folks benefitting from the hard won experience of the rest of y’all!

And (most of all), thanks in advance!

Those are bleed fittings. Not zerks. Do not pump grease in there.

Thanks flyboy, your rapid response beat me to coming back to edit my post (my face is pretty red right now! :)

So, I guess my question now is , is / are there any maintenance items I should be doing to this unit, either as a part of our winterization or semi- annually or anything?

We are in fresh water only but, I am now glad our boat cover does a pretty good job of covering this assembly!

No worries. It happens. Although, I can’t help you any on winterization. I live in FL and don’t know what that word means! Lol.

I wouldn’t think you have to do anything w the hydraulic system though. Nothing in there that would freeze.
