I'd like to increase the cranking speed on the Westerbeke 7.6 BTD. The manual reads:

"The minimum recommended capacity of the battery used in the engine's 12-volt DC control circuit is 350- - 400 cold cranking amps."

I assume I can go higher? If yes, how high? And what's a good brand/make/model?

Thanks

If your battery meets those specs it should crank that little motor over without much issue if it is in good condition. You may want to load test it, check your connections, starter etc.
You can go higher on the cca.
Any of the decent name marine starting batteries would be fine I buy my batteries from a commercial outlet that I’ve dealt with for years and they sell Deka Marine Master that I can get blems in. I’m a flooded lead acid guy and I have a 24 series starting battery for my gen set, 550 cca I think.

Go back with a good marine starter, dual purpose…but the exact same chemistry that your main start batteries are. The charger cant handle different/mixed chemistries.

I’m a fan of any Deka brand.

+1 and I believe Deka makes the Duracell batteries you can get at Batteries +. I've been using them for two cycles of battery replacements now and am still a fan. Good battery for the money. I'd love AGM but I'm just not quite ready to drop that much cabbage.

I believe I also have a group 24 on my 7KW Beke. Tiny little guy sitting next to the main batteries but it gets the job done...

Get the largest battery that fits in the allotted space. Deka and Interstate are 2 of the best.

i use cheapo walmart batteries across the board. I have an everstart MAXX27 starting battery on the generator and it works great. I think it was like $100

That will get the job done.
