I’m in need of a knee replacement the injections stopped working. I just watched my brother in law go thru it in Canada and to me it was a disaster. Scar tissue pain and a drastic loss of motion. Then I have lunch with a buddy who just had his other knee done with a new procedure where they don’t cut the muscle he was released from physical therapy care in 5 weeks… the scar was about 3”…. That’s what I want to do after the boat gets put away in the fall…. Here is the doctor if you want to research his procedure

Look into Dr Perry. He just did wife's second hip replacement and my regular doc says he's the one to see about knee, too.

So, my knee has gotten worse over the past month. To the point that it's on my mind most of time now because of it either uncomfortable, sharp pain or in between. I have a March 20 appt with Dr Perry to see what options I have. I'd like to wait til fall but I ain't getting any younger and the longer I wait I'm guessing the harder the recovery. If he can do it in early April, I might just get it replaced and work like crazy getting it rehabbed to be able to get around decent by mid-May. I was moving around without any walkee/cane within a month for the first one. Sure it was sore but I have a reasonably high pain threshold. I didn't take anything but Tylenol after day 2 of the first one. I figure doing the same this time.

If you do some pre-op prep, you'll have a faster recovery. My wife had a knee replacement in September, I was waiting at the PT office for her and there was a guy that had just had both knees done.
His son was one of the physical therapists, and he helped him with exercises so the Dr would do both at the same time.
Even getting one done, if you build up the right muscles, you'll have a much quicker recovery.

I've been dealing with severe pain in my left knee for two months now. I get around the house with crutches. MRI indicates a torn meniscus and the wait times are ridiculus for a surgical solution to the point where I am seriously considering looking beyond our borders. I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions from y'all.

sorry I’m joining the group late.
I’ve had 3 knee surgeries, 2 on left knee. Saw an orthopedist 6-7 years ago. Told me on scale 1-10 for knee replacement I was a 10.
Tried to sell me on the injections which to his shocked surprise i vehemently declined.

I know my knees well and I majored in physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, sports training and rehabilitation. I earned 3 clinical cardiology credentials so I know how the body works and heals.

worked in surgery in hospitals for years. I know how doctors think.

I declined knee replacement and any new scopes. Today I do squats, deadlifts, leg extensions and leg curls, leg presses. The only thing I can’t do is jog due to arthritis in knee

Find yourself a trainer that specializes in knee rehab. Avoid replacement surgery at all costs if possible. Research outcomes post knee replacement, it’s not necessarily an ideal outcome in fact a high percentage have absolutely no change in pain or functional mobility.

I’m 65 and not planning on getting any more orthopedic surgeries.

good luck

I'd like to know how any kind of rehab fixes arthritic bone on bone knees. Dr Hollmann in Florida replaced my left knee and pieced together the torn meniscus on my right knee before I moved north. He told me he bought me about 5 years with the scoped knee. He was right on. At my age, I'm around plenty of people that have had hips and knees replaced. And, in Florida, I was around plenty rehabbing their new knees when I was. I've talked to 2 that haven't been happy with the results. They didn't work hard during rehab and didn't regain range of motion. I'm going into get my knee checked out by Dr Perry later this month and get a plan together. I'm over 6 years into my first knee replacement and the worst thing I deal with is there is still numbness on one side of the knee. Full range of motion. Glad I did it. Beats downing all kinds of Tylenol to mask the pain.

My wife had her right knee replaced about 10 years ago. That went bad so they did it again but it has never been 100%. The left knee got to the point that she was unable to walk. The ortho said injections (of any kind) had been shown to not be effective. So, she just got the left replaced and it's going fine so far. The doctor said the process and outcomes were vastly different now as compared to when her first knee was done. That seems to be so but we will see. Also know three others who had knees replaced recently. One did both over the space of less than a year and all are very happy they did it.

Bone on bone on right knee. Tried cortisone shot first and pain free for 3-4 weeks. Could have tried gel injection and would need to be redone every 6 months. Not sure insurance would pay. Had total replacement 4.5 months ago, worked hard at PT, full range of motion, pain free, and it is solid as a rock. Still some minor swelling if I walk over 3 miles/day, but glad I had it done.

Knee replacement results do vary. Some people have great results, my brother in law has had both done, he's fine, walks like a crab but so what. There are well documented examples of no improvement at all. You do what you think is best for you.
My point is that the notion of just getting a replacement to fix a knee is not a true nor accurate expectation.

With regard to bone on bone arthritis, like I said, I was scored a 10 out of 10 for knee replacement 7 years ago. I also declined gel injections. Today my knee is about 80%, I can do almost anything in the gym except jog. There's tons of new approaches to knee rehab that I did and made a believer out of me. Arthritis however is something I choose to live with, its no big deal for me.

Good luck with your surgery

Electrical Doctor…..did you find a solution to your problem Ken? I know it’s Ontario health care, but I hope you have received treatment.
Fwiw, we had a cottage boat near you at Hucks.
Unfortunately, they will not do anytthing for me because it is not "Bone on Bone" yet.
I had a slip on "D-Dock" by the pool for 30 years.

I just talked to my buddy in Canada this week who needs both knees…. He has his first appointment next week…. It’s a conference call…. I laughed and said how the hell does that work. He said ya I’m kinda curious too. Too funny ..never wish for free health care

“I had a slip on "D-Dock" by the pool for 30 years.”

Interesting….have been long time customers as well…..starting in the late 80’s with a 220 Searay in the basin, a 270 Weekender in the covered slips, and a 34 Silverton Convertible covered as well….remember a boat called “Timeflys” ??? (Formerly La Grenouille/Dollar Diode).

Maybe Four Turtles will chime in!

To continue....

I met with the orthopedist yesterday and he confirmed my knee is worn out. Surprise... Tentatively scheduled for the week before Memorial Day.
That’s against the law in my book. I’m going when the boat goes away. I will need a rest anyway
